Description We'll never know why he made it or in that impulsive moment what he thought would happen. We only know what tragic ends came of it.

Prompted not by God nor duty, Jephthah, on the dawn of battle made a vow to sacrifice as a holocaust whatever came through his door if he returned victorious from battle.

The battle was indeed victorious. He saved his people from 18 years of oppression and returned the hero. And who came to greet him was his only daughter.

He held himself to his vow, let her grieve for two months...and then did as he promised...

And every man did what was right in his own eyes.

Beautiful work Kevin! I'm a Chaplain, recently returned from overseas and preparing a presentation for lay counselors who want to work with returning war veterans. I want to use Jepthah as an example. I love your pictures and would like to use three (Vow, grief, and empty) as graphics with my powerpoint slides. How do I go about getting permission for that? Thanks,
Bill

Cool! Thanks Brother, my event is not until early October (NANC annual conference, Walnut Creek, CA) but I have to submit notes and PPT in a few weeks. I'll let you know how it goes. Those images will really help the story come alive!

Well done. It's so important to retell these stories to those who have never read them.

I think he captured sorrow very well. My only criticism of this piece is the "flaming texture" around the axe...I find it distracting form the pain in the figures eyes. I like the concept of the texture around out the axe but I think I could be more subtle and still effective.

Thank you...I literally made some last second changes as I was reshooting the panel.
Billy was perfect as Jephthah...
