Eventually German National Socialism (Eugenie and Racism included) will stop being a evil icon and became again a political project open to debate. Β Not that distant to many other political projects still on the table on this planet.
But I suppose "eventually" isn't going to be next week. Β Β

Why would someone admit they're a Grammar Nazi anyway? Nobody likes a Nazi, no matter what kind! (Unless they're also a Nazi.)

More often wen someone use that sort of self derogatory talk is a strategy to avoid generate hostility. It works, many times. You say the thing someone possibly would want to say about your self, and you say it in the more unkind words possible, and by some reason people will accept your nazi-ways easily. Β Β
Talking about nazis, the true ones seems to be hard Β to find in our days, at least here were I live. That Β may help the expression to be acceptable: no nazi is likely to be offended.Β I remember to met only one self-declared racist admirer of Hitler, matter of fact he was one of the most polite individuals I ever talked wit in internet. It's weird, because grammar 'nazi' is actually totally an unfitting term... We're not really persecuting people with spelling/grammar issues so much as trying to help (or force, depending on the individual) others improve their grammar......?
...On the other hand, I suppose you could say we seek purity of the languagepool.

CureLovelyWarrior In reply to Chameleon-Veil [2013-04-05 15:20:53 +0000 UTC]
when people say "nazi" they don't mean they persecute them... it's just an exxaggerated way of saying people that go around being the "grammar police" and are a total pain about something that barely matters.

INB4 ANNE FRANKLY JOKES
Yeah, not a fortunate word. Also they can get a bit annyoing. Yes, I am kind of one too, but not when someone is missing an apostrophe due to hastiness OR MISPELL A GODDAMN WORD BY ACCIDENT ITS NOT GRAMMAR DAMMIT

Anni-kun [2012-11-28 15:49:24 +0000 UTC]
Well, you don't know if it's wrong or not with that sentence yet. It could continue with "This time its theme is such-and-such", in which case an apostrophe would be completely and totally wrong.
But yes agreed on the hate for that term. Especially much so when in most cases (like this one), people apply it to spelling instead of grammar... Which makes even less sense, because how can you be so strict about spelling/grammar if you don't even know what constitutes grammar?
I'm one of these people and I'd call myself more of a spelling nitpick :>

I suspect the term was coined by the one on the receiving end of a grammar tutorial they did not care to hear, and it stuck. And in time became used by the people themselves. Grammar police brings to mind the idea of "thought police" from 1984 by George Orwell who commented on totalitarian rule...
