fantastic. the darkest darks, and how you placed him on the page makes the composition dynamic. you have the complete value range and it really turns each form. you were really true to the sublties in the human form, esecially with the pectoral muscles. I am just so amazed with this, you should be soo proud.

That is incredibly detail, the shading and light is incredibe, especially under the arm and at the bottom of the torso.
The detail across the chest and the neck is what is really impressive, you are obviouslly really skilled in using different shades a lot of people have a tendancy to go too dark or too light.
Amazing work.

At first glance of the thumbnail, I thought this was an actual photo of a statue. It's that good! The overall anatomy is *very* accurate, the most outstanding feature is the veins branching out over the surface. But as fetology101 said, it doesn't have that raw, deeper look of the fibers in the muscle. But since you got it from a statue you can't be faulted for that. But this a simply outastanding peice of art, you have quite a feel with graphite

I have been doing art ever since i could pick up a crayon, but it has never been anything great. Then when i got outta high school, i started going to a GREAT art trade school: [link] . It's a 4 year school and i'm in my second year.

LOL! i thought i was gonna die, too. i really wasnt used to working so hard for such an extended period of time! (Working for 7 hours a day, with only an hour lunch break in the middle of it all) But after the first year i got really used to it, and now, when i start in my third year, i'll have to put in EXTRA hours to finnish all that needs to be done. YIKES! But it will be fun. ^__^

This reminds me of a museum they showed on television, where they had intricate statues of actual corpses and people with out or partial skin, it's bone-chilling to think they'd use a cadaver as art (not to mention animals too) but its amazing. You did a good job, I think I'm familiar with this statue, maybe he was covered in a thin layer of skin..I feel officially raped by your art

Really nice work. You are very talented. I didn't look at the larger file, but is that a second face on his cheek or facial anatomy?

Keriberrygirl In reply to insecteye [2005-04-29 19:55:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! LOLOL! no second face there... just a really shiny spot... it was really odd to paint. It was more prominent on the ref i used, so i had to tone it down to make it look a little better. Is that what u meant? or was it something different u were looking at?

insecteye In reply to Keriberrygirl [2005-04-30 20:23:36 +0000 UTC]

No, that's exactly it. What did you use for reference? If you're into this stuff, I have a great book called Anatomica you might want to track down. It's all exploded views of cadavers, executed by a wax studio. It's really great reference for the underlying structures of the human body. Take care!

Now I really have not much expertise here, but I think the abdomen looks as if it has skin on it. Perhaps the abs should look more seperate from all that's around them or something, just like the chest muscle is with the arm, and the upperarm muscles.

Good job. I'm glad I have a good internet connection, otherwise, I would have driven myself nuts trying to view your deviations.

extremely well done...what size is the original and how many hours spent?(i'm always curious about this kind of stuff)
you captured your subject well, it really looks like a non reflective monochrome sculpture of an anatomy cadaver.

ooh! That is rather nice. The stomache appears a little more skin-ny and less muscle-ey but it's still very well done And... I'm no expert on human anatomy so I can't help, whee!

yeah, i know... it wasnt really supposed to be an EXACT replica of human anatomy.... thats just how the statue was... LOL!

fetology101 [2005-04-04 22:42:52 +0000 UTC]

While the technical aspects of this are staggering, and I'm a bit jealous of your skill with a pencil, I've gotta say, something about it doesn't strike me. I think it may be the fact that, rather than appearing as if the skin is actually removed, you get the effect that muscle texture and veins were placed over already existing skin.

It may be because the way people are familiar with muscles is that the fibers have much more texture than we are seeing...that is to say, the rifts and valleys inbetween the musle fibers are typically much deeper. I'm not an anatomy expert, so this may or may not be true, but alot of the times when we see these things (3d images on The Learning Channel and what-have-you), that is what we see.

You did capture that effect in the face (very well I might add), but as for the rest of the body, it lacks that effect. Maybe because we aren't seeing any ligaments, and the muscle has the same consistency over the joint in the hands, shoulders, chest, etc.

Still. Very, very impressive drawing.

Keriberrygirl In reply to fetology101 [2005-04-07 23:45:26 +0000 UTC]

yeah, lol!! i totally agree. it really wasn't supposed to look exactly true-to-life, though. i had taken a photo reference that was taken of a famous statue replica made a really long time ago. so back in those days, that's the extent of what people knew the body looked like with the skin removed. not completely accurate, but i think they were pretty darn close. ^__^
