I think it was a very good idea, to place him in a nice, clean, natural environment. The contrast between the green and his red skin pops out his "unnatural" origin.

I think Doomguards was introduced to WoW back when Burning Crusade was released in 2007 or so. So I would say that Galio definitely looks like a Doomguard from WoW universe.
