Description
After Mrembo and his brother were sent off to war, their mother Ukuza was insistent upon setting up Avana with someone else. 'Forget Mrembo,' she would say, 'It's not like he's coming back.'
Ukuza kept pushing Avana, and the fear was getting to her. She agreed to meet the mystery male.
She met Kata on a rocky hill. He had fresh wounds, and he was crying. Avana knew what the look on his face meant. She had seen it in Mrembo. Kata had been abused by someone.
Avana offered to clean his wounds, but he refused. "I'm fine," he said, "but thank you for offering."
"How did it happen?" Avana asked, though she already knew the answer.
Kata looked away from her and straight into the sky. When he spoke again, his voice was soft and broken, "My father did this. Because I didn't want to be here. No offense, but I just don't see myself living the married life."
"That's ok." Avana said. "I already kind of have someone... I only really agreed to meet with you. Not marriage or anything like that."
Kata sighed, a weight seeming to lift off his shoulders.
At that moment, Avana decided to clean his wounds anyway. Kata initially flinched, but reluctantly allowed her to continue. It took hours for Avana to finish, and when she was done, they sat together on a rock. They talked about anything and everything, and before long, they fell asleep.
The following morning, when Kata woke up, he found Avana gone.
The two of them would have many more meetings and developed a friendship.
