Saavik is of Vulcan-Romulan origin after her parents being kidnapped by a group of Romulan scientists were raped. Disappointed by the results of these forced breedings the adults were killed. The children were helped to escape by the Vulcan adults. The children of these rapes were left to die on the planet "Hellspawn" . A Vulcan search party led by Spock searched for and found as many children as possible and returned them to Vulcan. Spock found Saavik and coaxed/bargained with her to join him in returning to Vulcan. No family was found so Spock took her as his protege. He had his hands full.

I love reading the fact that Kirstie Alley loved the show Star Trek as a child and used to fantasize Spock as her father.Β One can only imagine how happy sheΒ was to have her first movie be a Star Trek.

*sighs* What was the reason they didn't bring Kirstie Alley back to be Saavik for The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home? Did she just not want to reprise the role or something along those lines, or decided Star Trek wasn't for her? This is fantabulous and just makes us all the more wish she'd been Saavik in those other two movies.

That explains a lot. Probably would have overshadowed Shatner and Nimoy by the viewers too in that sense.
