Heh, with the way Kirk was talking at the beginning of TWOK, I've just now realized that it sounds to me like the decision to have the Enterprise become Starfleet Academy's prime training ship was actually Kirk's idea, that possibly having done everything he could possibly do as a starship captain, that it was time he and his crew start trying to teach the up and coming new generation or two of Starfleet personnel everything that they had learned in 20+ years of being 'out there'. In typical Kirk-like fashion, it sounds to me like he had blazed a new trail deciding to become an instructor at the Academy with one major condition: the Enterprise become Starfleet Academy's prime training vessel, his other senior officers also becoming instructors as well, their beloved ship now serving as their classroom to pass on their knowledge and experience. It worked great apparently for a few years.
