The Galaxy Class, it was an odd looking bird to say the least with the huge saucer section and what not. I always loved the Excelsior design, especially the 'B-type' Enterprise. Something about that design just shines. Might be the blue engine lights and white armor.
Did I read that one guy right about there never being a Galaxy Class destroyed up above? I can remember two being destroyed, one due to a computer virus in the first season of TNG and another being taken out by the Dominion in the Federation's first encounter (Kamikaze style, but that counts). I think the Borg took out even more of them during "The Best of Both Worlds" but it was hard to tell with all the wreckage.

Nice pic here. Yes, it does seem a bit silly taking needless civilians into space like that (although there are cases of crewmembers who married each other and had children aboard the ship). But then again, in British military forts in Canada during the War of 1812, there was a "lottery" for soldiers who could have their families live with them in the fort. This wasn't some modern base. It was a wood fort. So being put at risk of death by phaser or photon torpedo is no more different than having them put in the way of cannon-balls. Not smart, but...at least consistant! *groan*

At war all families with their accomodation and res. labs were removed.
Galaxy is a great battleship at all - big displacement, a lot of energy, heavy armor and heavy shielding system. No one of Galaxy class batleships were lost at Dominium War. The loss of USS "Enteprise-D" under fire of old Bird of Prey class cruiser was a stupid idea of "Generations" producers...

They didn't have the drydock time to remove the modular quarters in each episode yet a lot of combat was involved. Guess the families come under the antiquated heading of "red shirts"
