(JUST A QUICK WRITE. PLEASE FORGIVE THE POOR QUAILITY)
She was trapped.
Caught in a land dwelling man's net...
...but she was not without recourse. She could chew her way through the cords. Chew through them with ease...
...however there was just one problem. One thing that kept her from simply getting away.
She had been spotted.
The land dweller had approached the newly exposed reef, an ease in one hand and a painters pallet in the other.
He advanced slowly and cautiously toward her. The sea was still rough and the rocky reef was still wet.
Olivia knew what she had to do. Her training had covered this...
...possibility many times and the rules, her orders were clear.
She had to draw him closer.
She had to draw him near...
She had the strength and she knew where to strike...
...there could be no witnesses.
She watched him, watched as he eyed the cord that bound her to the reef. He kept watching as he got down low, as he got down on his knees. He removed a blade from his belt and every muscle in her body stiffened.
She cursed herself for a fool! Perhaps, she mused within herself, perhaps his intentions weren't as noble as she had hoped.
But the stranger merely lifted up both hands slowly, the palm of his free hand wide open.
"I don't want to hurt you..." his voice cried out just over the sound of the crashing surf. "...I just want to set you free..."
Grudgingly she nodded, and with glaring eyes she watched as he went to work on the cord.
It was a slow job as the cord looked fairly new and was still fairly taught.
He worked in silence, breaking the cord one fiber at a time. She had noticed that the young man had made some headway when he finally spoke but his words were washed away by the waves and he repeated:
"I am sorry."
Curious she asked:
"About..."
"About this whole mess..." he replied as he gestured to the cord that had bound her. "You wouldn't be here if someone had just been a little more careful...that's all."
He continued on in silence.
The sun had just begun its steady decent down toward the horizon when the stranger finally cut the last fiber of the cord.
The mermaid stretched out her arms and splashed her tail against the rising foam of the sea. She watched as he put his knife back into the empty slot on his belt...
Now was the time for her to act! She leapt upon him, knocking him down on his back and pinning him to the reef with her mighty tail.
She placed her webbed hands on either side of his head. Just a little pressure and the job would be done.
He locked eyes with hers.
She saw the truth dawn in those glistening cinnamon brown eyes of his.
She felt him swallow hard, and she heard him say in a horse and broken voice...
"I'm sorry..."
