For the World-Of-Aiers group

Following the early success of the Cyrtavia Soldarmia Tonde, the Cyrtavia design team tried to improve some features that were criticised by crews who flew the type on missions.  The most important issue was the limited lift, due to the type's short wingspan, as the original specifications called for the type to be deployed from the same hangars used by a number of its predecessors.

After some negociations, the Colonial Administration of the Degoland colony of Soldarmia agreed to drop this particular specification, agreeing to purchase a number of pre-fabricated hangars built by Cyrtavia large enough to house an aircraft with a wing span of up to 90 ft.  Liberated from this restriction, Cyrtavia's engineers went on to build a redesigned version of the Tonde.

Retaining the wing center section of the Tonde Model 1, the new Tonde Model 2 had newly designed outer wing panels with a greater sweep-back, which also corrected stability problems encountered at higher cabin loads, and larger ailerons to improve roll control at lower speeds.  These new wing panels increased the Tonde's wingspan from 65 ft to 82 ft.

The new wing also allowed the engineers to enlarge the Tonde's cabin: two 5 ft sections were inserted before and aft the main wing spars, increasing the fuselage length from 49 ft on the Tonde Model 1 to 59 ft on the Tonde Model 2, almost doubling the size of the cargo bay.  Finally, the cargo door itself was increased in size, allowing for larger items to be carried on board.

The new Tonde Model 2 still featured the same Cyrtavia Wolfpup engines of the Model 1, however the increase in wing surface alone allowed for heavier loads to be carried on the redesigned aircraft.

Kinda like the Russians designing a cargo plane that could double as a bomber.  Still, this does look like an excellent transport.  Now if they can build bigger and better engines . . .

It's very much a design limited by its engines.  I was working on an 'upgrade', but it got shoved to the side.

Maybe at a later date...

Maybe slap two more on the wings?  They seem big enough to hand them!

Hmmm... the fuselage is alright, but the wings and engines most definitely fall short.  I'm considering mating the fuselage with a new wing. >.>

I'd keep everything else as is, just add a couple of more engines to it.  That's just my take.

The outboard wing sections are bolted on, so putting the engines there would add a lot of stress on the connections - perhaps too lot.

No, I'd have to redesign the entire inner wing section, extending it outwards, and slightly reposition the wing at the same time to offset the changed center of balance...

Maybe add a tractor/pusher nacelle above the fuselage and centered on the wing?

Very nice plane, but there are some parts I don't know what are for? these things hanging under the wing, like a small second wing?

Ah, they are flaps - devices that provide extra lift during take-off and landing, effectively by enlarging the wing surface.  Most flap designs are incorporated inside the wing, however the Tonde uses a different (and for Cyrtavia - an easier to build) design.

... Could an alternative solution had been folding up outer wings?

It could, but doing so would make the construction far more complicated, and heavier than a regular wing.  The folding mechanism would add quite a bit of weight to the whole, and it would also bring in structural issues which might compromise the design...

This is very sweet, are we going to get a cut-away view of this one? I'd love to see the mechanism for those flaps!

Here you are!

From front to back, that is the observer's/bomb aimers compartiment; single fixed forward-firing machine gun; cockpit (full cockpit for pilot, and secondary, rudimentary cockpit for co-pilot/bomb aimer/observer); navigator's/radio operator's compartiment, with extra fold-down seat for an extra crew member; cargo compartiment; toilet; and rear gunner station.

The flap mechanism is actually relatively simple (as Cyrtavia doesn't have the know-how for some more complex technology: it is simply a "screwjack and guiderail" system.  This allows for four flap settings: retracted (as shown here); extended (extended back 1 foot, increasing the effective wing surface while not creating any additional drag); 15° down (16 inch extended); and 30° down (20 inch extended).

Very cool! It's great that they have a toilet... that's vital on longer flights! If I understand the screwjack and guiderail, it simply moves the flaps in a kind of 'eccentric orbit', so shifting from retracted to fully down requires passing through the extended and partially down positions?

I feel sorry for the rear gunner... having to stand up while under fire, with the aircraft making all kinds of evasive manoeuvres... he must get thrown around a lot.
