Oil on canvas, 18 x18, 2010.Here you go folks, another self portrait, this time for my male character series. Done for “My Favorite Tale” contest over at
This is Alfred, from my current favorite musical, Tanz der Vampire. He’s just a student, studying under Professor Abronsius, vampire hunter. However, it seems like Alfred has once again lost the Professor in the woods. This is a problem for Alfred as he is well meaning but scared of everything. (If your familiar with the show this scene would take place during the song He, ho, he.)
So I’ve had plans for this piece for months but was too lazy to actually execute it. I was motivated to do it with the announcement of current contest, I thought, wow I’ve got the perfect thing for it. And so here it is.
Won third place in "My Mavorite Tale" contest
Won Second Best of Show Am. Dev. 2011 Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition.

This is a very well done painting.

This is really interesting! You included a self portrait with a fictional character? The subtle shifts of tones in the skin is really well done. Also, what medium do you use with the oil paint? It looks so smooth and silky.

Yes, most of my self portraits are me as someone else. As for medium, I use liquin in small amounts, wet on wet, layer upon layer, but the secret is in the brushes. I prefer soft bristled brushes, natural and synthetic, in place of the stiffer ones that are traditionally used with oils.
