Description Simbakubwa kutokaafrika meaning "Big/Great Lion from Africa" was a giant hyaenodont discovered last year in Kenya.
It ruled the early Miocene over 20 million years ago and was larger than a polar bear in size. It was within the same size range as its cousins Megistotherium and Hyainailouros (these may or may not be synonymous) regardless they were all huge animals.Β The lower jaw alone is bigger than an actual lion skull, which had self-sharpening teeth essential when dealing with large prey. These were often pachyderms like rhinos, anthracotheres and proboscideans but I imagine chalicotheres and other ungulates were fair game as well.Β
