Description
“We were blind to the light
We were numb to the world
And the breath of the still
Sent a chill thru the days
And the hell of your eyes
And the cracks on your lip
And the cold of your breath
Makes me remember
When we were dead”
- Danzig
Finally and with pride I can reveal her and turn each one of you to stone. (Please imagine me sitting in front of my PC with a sinister laughter, my hand clutching a glass of Irish Whiskey)
This drawing took me over 45 hours. If you spent so much precious life time doing something it should be worth the endeavor – and I can say it was.
(I think now I understand the way snake scales circulate a snake’s body much better than before).
The plan of drawing the Medusa is many years old (shouldn’t be a surprise: beautiful women with stuff in their hairs which doesn’t belong there and snakes are some of my main Sujets/themes)
but as usual it took me a long time between idea and actualization. Since I was a kid I was fascinated by her.
When I was small the Medusa in “Clash of the Titans” (1981) freaked me out and my grandfather who is artist as well did many paintings of her where she stood as a symbol of undercooling of society and absence of humanity.
But maybe the most impressive depictions of her (which influenced me the most) are the paintings by Franz von Stuck.
You will notice strong similarities. His painting of Lucifer (whose wicked gleaming eyes share the same power like those of the Medusa) is one of my all-time favourite paintings.
So like pretty much everything I do it is expression of my inner worlds and feelings and homage to different sources too.
I didn’t want to depict her as femme fatal like modern paintings mostly do (even though this would be interesting too and is something I probably will do in the future)
or as more snake-/monster-like which is also common (and has been the original portrayal of her in ancient Greek).
I was more fascinated by some kind of antithesis between the innocence of a young woman and the piercing cold look of her eyes (in combination with her exaggerated hair style).
As a little side note: every snake-head has a counterpart in nature, there are no made-up snakes in this picture (another reason this drawing took so long).

Oh, I like the combination of stark lighting, smooth shading, and pointillism. Like an old Mac screenshot of a German Expressionist film or something.

Amazing! Her eyes caught me at first, but the snakes all have their own personalities. Love it.
