Aceo referenced by fav.me/d8p9ild by mrscats and general gull pictures, so that I could paint a profile rather than awkward front-facing gull. I could do so much better at attempting realism if I only could paint a straight horizont line! Duh.

A wonderful scenery and a wonderful card :3 I love the sea and maritime motives in generell and this painting conveys the typical atmosphere. The pose of the gull looks very dynamic and authentic, just like the bird could flap the wings at any moment. I really like the perspective, too, the effect of the deep-set horizon like you're looking up in the sky

Hey, I liked the awkward front-facing gull! xD By the way, I also like your painting 
Maybe you already do like that, but after lighter layers, why not using a ruler and make a very light pencil line to define the horizon?

I felt like this position could make the card look more wide and spaceous, whereas down/front facing gull would lead the eyes down to the beach. But yeah, the full-frontal gull has it's own charm, so maybe I'll paint that one too, and see how that turns out!
And than you for the tip! I usually do the sketchΒ horizon just fine, and screw it up in the painting process, when most of the graphite is washed away. I just can't do straight line with a brush. And I don't like putting a pencil on top of watercolors- in my experience, it always stands out too much! But you gave me an idea- maybe a little adjustment with some colored pencils would be worth a try!
