Some ill defined magic. It's been cald mana or other things. This Phyrexian is a glass cannon able to phase that intangible ball through most types armor and shielding and detonate it inside the target.
I thought of it's name "Mancer" after the term necromancer, like a kind of magician.
It's plausible that he could throw a different magic ball into dead or broken stuff to recucitate them under his control.
I refer to him as a glass cannon because his phasing energy is a trade off from the telekinetic shielding the other phyrexians use, like a trade between physical and ethrial abilities. He'd either need to hide or rely on others for defense.

do you think he'd be able to control enemies without killing them? or is it like a force that takes over the vacant hole left by the dead guy's life force/ soul/ consciousness?

He'd prefer to control the dead non-resistant. Any time wasted struggling for control could be dangerus.
