Description

This is a complex issue.  There are a lot of arguments, debates, and flame wars that revolve around this issue.

Here's where I'm coming from:

It was winter (March 2015), and over four months had passed since I last worked up the nerve to present as anything but male.  It's hard to think of four months as "quick" but before then it had taken years to come to a point where I would allow myself to step out of the box I had been placed in.  I had posted the results of my last "exploration" to great success and my confidence was at an all time high.

This time I had actually gone out and purchased new clothes - something I thought I could never do alone.

I tried on one of my new outfits and looked in the mirror.  I stared for a long time, frozen.  The first thing that finally came to mind was 'what a joke.'

I wasn't beautiful, I wasn't cute, I wasn't even feminine.  I was a joke.

I spiraled into a deep depression, the new clothes haven't been worn since but for a matter of minutes, and although I am beating back my self loathing one day at a time I couldn't help but wonder where it had come from?

Then I remembered the cartoons I watched growing up where silly characters would put on women's clothes - look atrocious - and get a laugh.

I remembered loving (and laughing) at things like Monty Python where toady men would smear makeup on their faces, don wigs, and screech like parrots.

Was that me, too?

I have not renounced any of this entertainment, but I can't help but feel sorry for the walls they help build around my femininity.

I don't like talking about my gender issues.

And the reason for that is I'm terrified of not being taken seriously.

So are you implying that you're considered yourself as a self-identify "woman?" Even though you're biologically not

Apparently this got semi-popular all of a sudden. CD is trying to spread this around on Tumblr, to mock you. It's disheartening to see her trying to tear you down, like why? Why can't she just see this artwork, disagree, and go on her merry way? You don't deserve that.

I always hate that "you just don't get the joke" line of reasoning people spew so often. Yes, I get the joke. I get why the joke is intended to be funny. Sometimes it may even be funny. That doesn't make the joke not harmful, though. That's more important than whether or not the joke is funny. Like it never occurs to these people that someone could possibly find a joke offensive unless they just didn't understand the joke. Like clearly, if you understood the joke, you couldn't possibly find it offensive .

I know this picture is pretty old. I hope you're finding your way through this .

Thanks for having my back! ^_^

I'm not easily torn down by random internet dwellers, although admittedly I'm saltier on DeviantArt.
I suppose it's because - of the spaces where my art lives - DA is the most outdated.
Whenever someone trolls a work of art from years ago I do a double take and think "...people are still looking at these?"

Glad to hear from someone who understands! Hope you're doing well! <3

none of these characters were trans though.
the JOKE was in fact it was a MALE character who we've come to know as being only male wearing women's clothes.

arguably the only case you have in the thought bubble IS family guy, and not of stewie griffin but of quagmire's mother who is constantly referred to as "quagmire's dad ida."
that is the only legitimate case where being trans is the joke.

no. i get it because i hear this argument a lot from people, like you, who do not understand 1 what jokes are and 2 what the point of these jokes are. if you heard a joke about a minor not being served beer because he was minor, would you too assume the joke was about children? because that is what you're doing here

yes really. comedy is about subverting expectations.
you expect men to wear men's clothes
the subversion is a man in a dress.

its no one elses fault you're a little pussy and dont understand comedy

LOL that sounds really ironic coming from someone into forced feminization cross dressing porn.

Let me be clear about the joke here: it's you.
You're the joke.

If you can't wrap your head around the concept of comic that's literally not my problem.

And i was actually joking by saying that the joke was still in my head, because it is, but obviously i don't use it, i don't think about it, and yet it is still there, somewhere, very deep in my head, because it made me laugh sometimes, but obviously people are sensitive as a bubble nowadays and i can't use it, making me to just put it inside my thoughts very, very deep, only to myself.....so yeah....no

the problem is literally none of these characters are trans or meant to be trans
they're men in dresses which subverts expectations, the escense of comedy.
equating men in dresses to transwomen IS transphobia though

Just because a guy dresses as a girl that doesn't mean they're trying to joke about the trans community. That's not even the same thing. Why is Madea even up there? They don't joke about trans people at all
In those movies.

justinhubbell In reply to Hannigrahm [2015-07-15 13:07:46 +0000 UTC]

You don't get it.
Please do your homework about gender.

Here's a good place to start:
thoughtcatalog.com/zinnia-jone…

I don't think when Tex Avery was animating Bugs Bunny cartoons he intentionally thought "okay how am I going to fuck with Transgenders today?"
He probably wasn't aware of the term.  Nevertheless at that time (and today) the idea that a male character can put on a woman costume and be treated different is (apparently) hilarious.
So it's less about making a joke about the trans community, so much as making a joke that perpetuates dangerous ideas about gender.

The idea that someone is presenting as a certain gender for their own personal gain is dangerous.
The idea that a man would dress as a woman solely as part of a performance is dangerous.
The idea that we shouldn't take people who's gender is fluid seriously is dangerous.

Madea is up there because half the laughs he gets are due to the fact that he is man, and will break out of character to deliver his lines in his regular voice.

What this comic is really about - is transgender youth feeling intense self loathing.  I wrote about it in the description, perhaps you didn't read it?

justinhubbell In reply to Hannigrahm [2015-07-16 20:55:55 +0000 UTC]

Being transgender doesn't automatically make you a gender scholar.

Take me for example, I had to study and learn many different concepts revolving around gender before I was able to really express certain things about myself.
And I'm not claiming I'm an expert either, there's a lot I have to learn.

But the idea that people don't like trans folk because "we can't take a joke?"  That's ridiculous.  And if you honestly feel that way - than yes - you do need to do your homework, transgender or not.

justinhubbell In reply to Urvy1A [2015-06-29 13:40:02 +0000 UTC]

Excellent point!  I would also cite American Horror Story Season 3.

As much as trans people are the butt of jokes in comedy, we're often portrayed as villains in horror.
It's a cheap way for lazy writers to add a "twist" to the plot - but it revolves around the audience's prejudice and ignorance.
The worst part is that it portrays violence toward queer people as being "justifiable."

I could totally explore this in another comic, thanks for bringing it up!

If people can shrug off these fictional characters dressing as Women to be harmless then why can't they do the same in real life? ( Don't have to answer that. XD ) There is never a reason why a person should be shamed 4 being different in a way that is harmless to the next person in line.

You are not a joke. Your life matters just as much as every1 else's.
