Might just clear up a few things right here. I'm using a Nikon D60 + kit lens (Nikkor 18-55mm).
For my macro shots I use macro filters which are muuuuch cheaper than macro lenses of course (you see I'm all about saving money lol).

I know there's tons of comments here but I just wanted to extend my gratitude for this little tutorial I desperately want a flash unit[ring flash for macro] but I cannot afford one,nor will I be able to any time soon. The on board flash is usually treated like it'll give you leprosy lol So for someone to really work with it and mod it a little bit DIY style is very industrious and helpful of you ^^ Thanks again.

wunderbar! das versuche ich aus! ich liebe deine macros.

ok my german is a bit rusty so ill ask this question in english how long does the juice box have to be. I'll tell you why I ask. I usually use the reverse lens macro technique (or poor man's macro) [link] so i have a small lens and i would get very close to the subject.

Jules1983 In reply to chirilas [2009-10-19 18:28:07 +0000 UTC]

I've tried that reverse lens technique, and I seem to be doing it wrong coz all my pics come out looking waaayyyy too dark so I gave up on that

Anyway, on to your question. The side that's laying on your lens should not exceed your lens. The top side of the box should always be longer since it will help diffuse the light. Does that make any sense? I sure hope it does

chirilas In reply to Jules1983 [2009-10-19 18:33:26 +0000 UTC]

yes it does make sense! danke!

as for the reverse macro, its all about shooting in manual and tweaking the exposure time. or if you shoot in aperture priority (A) then overexpose by +1 or so and it should work better

I personally love the technique because I feel like I can intrude into the life of bugs or catch a glimpse of the microcosmos around

examples: [link] , [link] , and my very very favourite of all time [link]

I think I need to go buy a set of macro filters now! Great idea!

(I have D60 with kit lens as well.. can you recommend good 52mm macro filter to start with? Thanks!)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jules1983 In reply to OPJ [2009-10-19 18:33:13 +0000 UTC]

I got mine off amazon and am very happy with them. Take a look here: [link]

For actual macro shots you will need a +10 macro filter, so should you buy a set, make sure it's included! Here's a few examples: [link] [link] [link]
Looks like the cheapest set is $20, which obviously is sooo much better than buying a macro lens for 20 times that amount!

OPJ In reply to Jules1983 [2009-10-19 22:17:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I was actually looking at the Zeikos set since it's only $15 with shipping. Good enough for a test run.

I bought macro extension tubes for $10 online, but they didn not work well at all. This should be much better!

Jules1983 In reply to Handie [2009-09-03 11:49:38 +0000 UTC]
