Generally, I'm not a fan of smoking, but for this piece I think it set the mood.
Webmater Grave is a bad ass from the world of City of Heroes.

It's mostly the nitty-gritty details I'm interested in. How many layers do you use? What kind of filter do you add? These are sorts of things that give your pieces that cool faux-animation feel that I find neat.

I haven't. I think you can just upload the PSD as a deviation and then it's available under "file download". Maybe you have to add a thumbnail, I'm not sure.
