The Adeptus Custodes is the oldest militant chamber of the "sacred Terra" (new title of the land in the future) its main function is to be the personal escort of the Emperor and loyal executors of his sacred will, together with the Emperor the Custodians forged the foundations of a new Empire for Humanity among the stars.
Its origins are a mystery and many of the details of its creation were omitted by the Emperor himself, it is speculated that his human genome was remade from children with cellular modulation, superhuman growth and "psychic" indoctrination. (Development of mental abilities) By achieving biological immortality they would never stop learning martial and political skills as war advisers and Captains.
Few were the humans who would be integrated into the ranks of the "Adeptus Custodes" reaching a maximum of 10,000 Praetorians in active service, to exalt their duty the Custodians would wear the first artisan armor with unique golden decorations as their bearer; the Custodians' primary weapon is the rifle-modified halberd traditionally called the "guardian spear."
The Custodians are the oldest Praetorian guard along with the "Thunder Warriors" both regiments actively participated in the "Unification Wars" of ancient Terra, being the Custodians who led the attacks against the corrupt lords "Techno-barbarians" who had enslaved in deep suffering to humanity; A compelling record of the custodians in their pursuit and espionage against the Techno-barbarian chieftains were the sieges and captures of each kingdom that opposed the Emperor's unification, the chieftains who resisted and did not submit to the Emperor were executed by the custodians. (The same fate was shared by the "Thunder Warriors" with their uprising to the Empire.)
With the birth of the new Empire a new “Golden Age” began for humanity as civil order was restored under the guidance of the Emperor and his Eternal watchers.
An additional fact the Emperor chose the "Imperialis Eagle" as a new banner and symbol for the galactic conquest of him on behalf of all humanity.
