Description
Decided to try my hand at designing Leerans. In open water they swim like grebes, using their webbed feet. Otherwise they alternate between feet and tentacles and may anchor themselves in place with the suckers on their toes and tails. Dry land presents a challenge but as long as their skins are moist they’re all right.
Their brains are distributed in several lumps of neural tissue, including down their arms, with a large central one in the node on the back of the head. This represents some difficulty for Yeerks, as Leerans don’t have a built-in orifice near enough to that node to penetrate and Leerans, while they can be subdued and controlled to what seems like an acceptable degree by experienced Yeerks, are unusually capable of rebellion. Additionally, while Yeerks and Leerans both have slime coats and need time in liquid environments Leerans require an amount of salt that Yeerks find intolerable.
Leerans captured by the Yeerk empire are surgically altered to have a sealable opening in the cranial node, and Yeerks on their way in or out need to be moved to and from the Pool by hand. If not for their psychic abilities they wouldn’t be worth infestation at all.
