Description Okay, take away the cracking earth on the right and the laser blast on the left and what you'll have is the temp background to an image I did months ago (one of about 3 backgrounds I did for that image, I eventually decided on something much simpler to give the subject more attention). I came across this one again today and decided to make a full deviation out of it as the planet and what was a nebula itself looked rather good and all I needed to do was fill in what was a large amount of blank space.

If you want, you can make up some kind of story for this. I'd always intended that the planet start breaking up from the opposite end of the laser blast and I'm not entirely sure why, but it just seemed right for me (if I really wanted to, it wouldn't have been too much trouble to have it the right way round).

As for why it could be doing that, you can make up your own scenario. I like to think that the laser blast has gone through the core of the planet and out the other side where the planet has started to break up from the pressure... or something. It makes no sense, but frankly, I like it as an image.

Enjoy.

I got one!
Like how a bullet wound is always bigger on the point of exit, not entry; as the force is compressed when it hits solid matter, it becomes progressively more concentrated (meaning that the further the blast travels, the more powerful it becomes).

Put a sharpen filter on it and it might benefit

If you're talking about the cracks on the right side, trust me, I tried it, but it didn't work. Frankly, I've never trusted the sharpen filter all that much.

mgdeath5 In reply to Joshi38 [2007-08-25 23:20:04 +0000 UTC]

Just do it. I trust it and reap the benefits

Just sharpen it, don't sharpen more. On a duplicate layer if you want. Then you can erase the parts that don't benefit from it.

Actually I've just had a look at your gallery, it seems you know what you're talking about. I'll give it a try

Oh, and I assume you do mean the right hand side.

The whole image actually could actually be sharpened and would look nice, in my opinion, although I don't have Photoshop on my work computer so I haven't tried it.

Sharpened, but I'm not sure if there's much difference (I did it on the larger resolution file, which may be why) I also tried sharpen more which looked like it made more of a difference, but I'm not sure if it was too sharp. This is just normal sharpen.

mgdeath5 In reply to Joshi38 [2007-08-27 02:39:22 +0000 UTC]

I see a good difference
Usually, the smaller the image, the more you'll get with sharpen (if the image needs it of course, some images are pixelated while seeming blurry, so sharpen would turn it into major grain).

The more you play around with Photoshop, the more you'll understand to what degree you should use the tools and filters. You should always look at images made by the pros and wonder how they made a certain effect. And then try making that effect.

Yeah, I've played with photoshop for the better part of around 6 years, so i've got a good idea on what the filters do. I just always felt like sharpen was almost like cheating, I try not to use it unless I have to, but it does seem to make a difference, so who knows.

Fair enough, I'll give it a try, if it's any good I'll edit this one with it, otherwise I'll just let you know of the results.

either I am a complete and total perv...or...
well..
is it just me or does this look a little like a giant breast with a laser coming out the centre of the nipple?

The colours and all are great, but when I first looked at it, that's just what I saw.

I hope I havent upset you.

If you really do see it as a breast then it's anything but lovely, it has cracks all down one side of it and it's so perfectly round it may as well be a big fake porno breast.

Actually, planets do crack on the opposite side of impact. See the Death Star Moon with a huge-ass crater on one side and resultant cracks on the other.

That and I figured it just looked better.

Joshi38 In reply to Tiberius47 [2007-06-11 14:33:11 +0000 UTC]

You mean the bit where it seem to ignite the atmousphere in an odd way?

Truth is it's something I also did months ago which I added to this and morphed it to fit the planet. It's basically fractal art, but done using Photoshop filters. I basically did it when I was messing around with photoshop one day, but I didn't submit it because I felt there was no reason to.

Thanks.

A magician doesn't reveal his secrets... much.

Frankly, there's a whole host of space themed tutorials out there, ones on how to do stars, nebulas, planets, that sort of thing. I basically just took everything I knew and adapted it to what I wanted. Basically just keep experimenting and you'll come up with something cool.

If you really wanted a walkthrough though, I'm sure I could sort you something out.

Thanks, most of it was the result of another picture I did a few months back which I'd warped and shaped to fit this picture.
