Although they did use radial aviation engines in the M4 Sherman, most of the engines were the Ford GAA engine. It's an all-aluminum, 32 valve DOHC V8 originally designed for fighters. They also used one of my favourite engines of the war, the Chrysler A57 multibank. This monster used five Chrysler 250ci flat-head straight-six cylinder engines arranged around a central crankshaft, creating a 30 cylinder 1250ci engine, with an output of 470 hp.

The fact that US tanks ran off of gas (instead of diesel, as most Axis tanks did) didn't escape the notice of high command. The Wright R-975 Whirlwind used in Allied tanks was slightly detuned so it could use 100 octane gas, instead of the 150 octane aviation gas used in aircraft. (Of course, the use of gasoline fuel, flammable "cherry juice" hydraulic fluid and some rather poorly designed ammunition storage locations gave Sherman's the nickname of "Ronsons", after the slogan of the Ronson cigarette lighter: "Lights the first time, every time.")

Makes sense. For some reason I thought the Sherman used a Cadillac V8.

Yeah, it's an 8 cylinder aircraft engine... the aviation fuel they had to use made the sherman a real fire hazard :/
