Description final got a handle on painter X... this is what i came up with while learning it.

Its a REALLY fun program

i dunno how i feel about this painting overall... i sorta expected it to come out different but i just couldnt get some things to work. If you have ANY CRITS PLEASE leave them! Be as harsh as you want.
Im thinking my problem is blocking out light and dark with more definition... the light seems to just sorta blend together argh... what do you guys think?

***EDIT dec 20/08***
Thnx to some comments im starting to add/change some things. Ive given the painting a bit more of a purpose now as suggested by Konako. Now he is hunting dragon eggs and feathers for his witch doctor medicines!

***EDIT feb 23/08***
touched up the cliffs to the right a bit and added some reflected light to help tie the picture together

Hi, I am making a custom set of cards for Magic: The Gathering (for the sake of playtesting with my friends) and was wondering if I could use this image for this purpose. These will not be sold for any reason, and are simply for personal use.

This is soooooooooooooooooo AMAZING!!!!! the bear is just so majestic & lovely, the warrior is so epic lookin' & the background is breathtakin'
The bears emotion soooooooo deep in meaning,u cant b sure of his true emotion. It's as if he's focused on & vexed with the same dragon his rider is hunting bt also as if he is instead upset wit his master, lookin' in hidden terror at the poor dragon about 2 be smited as if ready 2 throw off his master & cause the dragon 2 flee so his master may nt hurt it.
Watevr emotion u were trying 2 display,it certainly workz well in2 the scene & the whole image. Very well done,i rlly adore this!

Absolutely fantastic.

I am not sure if someone mentioned this but here goes.

Both the rider and the bear and the rocks they are standing on are magnificently 3d and i have no crits to offer for those two. But the rocks behind them on the right side as well as the background needs a little more of that popping out.

In other words, the bear and the hunter look like they are on a display in a museum that has a flat canvas painted wall.

Bring the closer rocks in the background to a saturation closer to the forefront rocks but a touch more fading into the horizon. Then allow the further ones to blend and fade into the horizon.

I like what you did with the left tree with the wind so also maybe next time you could try doing the same wind blowing on the characters.

You asked for crits, so here's what I'm seeing

If you get a chance to see Jason Chan's tutorial video produced by Massive Black and Conceptart.org I think you'd get a lot out of it. He makes big points about using a variety of tools in Painter (no matter the version, really) for getting more than one standard shape. For example, some images stick to the softer brushes and some to the harder... but by using both you'll get a variety of shape that pulls in the viewer.

Right now your image feels very similar throughout due to the smooth rendering, by putting some jagged shapes into the stones the clouds will separate a bit more and provide depth.

I would also carry the colors through a bit more.... by pulling some of that purple from the sky and putting it into the recesses of the bear like sorta hidden in the shadows, you can provide a nice unity of design and color. Makes the image feel more whole. If you look at a lot of the successful painters out there, they use the same colors throughout a piece to really make it feel like one cohesive unit. This is close, but a lil bit more of it would go far.

I like the composition, though the tree may be pulling my eye a lil far - not sure really... either way it's got a good layout. All in all I think this is a good piece, just not taken as far as you can likely go

I hope that helps!

hey thanks a lot! those are some good points!

Im primarily a 3D artist and im really tryin to work on my 2D which ive sorta ignored in the last year or two. Ill try and get that Jason Chan tutorial thanks for the tip there!

jonWILEY In reply to jonWILEY [2007-12-20 19:28:04 +0000 UTC]

ugh my message sent before i finished

anyway, ill pup some purple into the bear shadow and replace the red shadows i have now. and yeah, i can see how if some of the rocks were harder that would be better.

ive got so much to do that i cant finish this painting for a few more days so it will give me some time to try and get Jason chans video too! yay!

thanks again for your input man

Hey no worries. I'm just happy to finally run into somebody happy to receive crits haha

That Jason Chan vid helped me a lot actually, I happily vouch for it. I think it's like a $10 download or something. Far cheaper than those Gnomon DVD's out there and just as good of quality.

Best of luck on the 2D work!

WOW! okay i just downloaded that Jason Chan video... im gonna come back and rework this painting now after watching it. Man i need more time! i wanna rework it now but i cant till next week! ahhhh

thank you so much for the tips.
Totally worth the 10 bucks!!!

cmalidore In reply to jonWILEY [2007-12-20 22:03:46 +0000 UTC]

Isn't that snazzy? I got painting the next day after watching that and it felt like a breath of fresh air. I dare say it inspired me again after a long time of not really being inspired..... the industry can suck the creativity right out of you, y'know? Either way I hope that helps you out a bit, Jason's got some bloody good info in that thing

I hear they're bumping up the prices of their downloads to $14 after the New Year, but I still think it's worth it. Especially with the incredibly skilled people they have on staff there at Massive Black.

jonWILEY In reply to cmalidore [2007-12-21 02:19:15 +0000 UTC]

yeah! well luckily i got it when it was 10 bucks.

And yeah... the industry and really make you hate art sometimes! haha

Im doing some portraits for people for christmas so im using all those new techniques... im just running the video and painting along with it! haha

jonWILEY In reply to cmalidore [2007-12-20 19:38:12 +0000 UTC]

hah well once you get into the industry your humility gets left at the door right? Im glad you took the time to make constructive crits!

Art is the one area where you cant be defensive because no one can know it all. You can always imporve!

I really like how you did the fur on the bear and the colours in the clouds. My crit is what's going on in this picture? It looks like the man is aiming his spear at that little rock in the ground whilst walking off a cliff.

i was gonna put a rabbit there but then i got really lazy... ill put a rabbit tonight but my WOW raid started haha good crit though

i probably wouldnt have put the rabbit in if no one complained

jonWILEY In reply to jonWILEY [2007-12-20 05:37:32 +0000 UTC]

so i put the rabbit in... but i was like, why would a rabbit be at the top of a mountain... doesnt make much sense... so then i thought, well ill put a birds nest and he will be hunting eggs... then i thought, naw he wouldnt need a spear to get birds eggs... so THEN i thought! DRAGONS ARE AMAZING! and i put a dragon! haha

rell121 [2007-12-19 22:03:41 +0000 UTC]

I like it a lot! Just one small critique: the man's headdress doesn't seem to be responding to the wind like everything else is.

Everything else about the picture looks great.

Would you mind telling me what brushes you used? I'm also trying to familiarize myself with painter (though I only have painter essentials ), and I'm having trouble finding brushes that I'm comfortable with.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jonWILEY In reply to rell121 [2007-12-19 22:18:46 +0000 UTC]

Good point about the headdress! Never even thought of that so ill fix that up for sure.

For painter X (i heard there is a lot of change from version to version) my favorite brushes are the:

"Artist Oils: Dry Bristle" This is a cool new feature to painter because it loads up your brush with paint and runs out after a second or two of painting, leaving with you a blender brush. I use this for the general strokes of the back ground. It feels like a pallete knive IMO.

"Oils: Smeary Round" This is a good brush for details. If you push hard you get lots of colour and if you push lightly it turns into a blender brush. Very handy.

Other than that, i dont use many other brushes. I take my painting into photoshop here and there to make muliply layers so shadows or whatver... or for general colour tweaks. I also did the moss in photoshop just because its easier to import custome "fuzzy" brushes and the like.
