Description I'd like to share with you a little glimpse into the process of this Hulk painting I did a while back. (Sorry for my english!)

For this particular piece I used a technique that mimics oil painting. I started with a basic pencil sketch and then in a new layer I put big blocks of colors on top. I'm no looking for precission yet, that will come later.

I highly recommend that you start to work with reference images. You may not know it, but almost all professional artists use references for their drawings in some way. Some of these artists are Norman Rockwell, Andrew Loomis, Alex Ross, Alex Raymond, even Renaissance artists had people posing for their paintings.

For the sketching process, depending on how accurate you want your drawing to be with the reference, you can use a grid, the character's head as the unit of measure, or none at all and just go with your gut. What you feel comfortable with, it's your choice. Normally I only use these two techniques, it is more than enough for me to get the proportions of the figures right from the beginning.

It's important to note that while using a grid can save you a lot of headaches, there's still a lot of work to be done. It won't solve all the problems, you still have to know about perspective, the construction of the figure, anatomy, lights and shadows. There are plenty of books and tutorials that will help you with that. I personally recommend a book called "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" by Andrew Loomis as a starting point.

Back to the painting process. Once I had the basic color blocks in place, I started to refine using specific colors for each area, paying careful attention to the reference. Be aware, sometimes we think that we are seeing a green color, but it turns out it is actually a desaturated yellow. We think that we are seeing a purple color on the shorts, but it is actually a desaturated blue, almost grey. I never use the eyedropper tool, each color is chosen through observation and trial and error. If I put the wrong color, I just paint over it with the correct one. I use brushes with different levels of opacity to blend the colors.

Keep refining and blending colors until you are happy with the result. Sometimes you will panic because you will feel that the painting is not looking right. Don't give up, just keep painting over it, it will eventually start to look good. But don't forget to observe and analize your reference. The information is there, you have to know where to look.

Anyways, I hope this helps you. Feel free to ask me anything.
