Description An older male illusion beast is challenged by and battles with a younger male for dominance of the herd. But rather than fighting with teeth, claws, or horns, they fight with mystical lights and sounds...

Illusion beasts (Alucinatiotheriidae) are a family of large herbivorous plumasquamates. Built with a similar body shape to extinct hadrosaurid dinosaurs, illusion beasts are social animals, usually living in family groups and herds of around a dozen to three-dozen individuals, though even larger groups have been reported. Illusion beasts are also noted to be fairly intelligent, such as being able to remember individual faces for years at a time.
Illusion beasts have large, colorful, pterosaur-like crests on their heads. Males usually have brighter, more colorful crests than females, and a crest's pattern is unique for every illusion beast. These crests are mainly used for display, though they also connect to one of the illusion beasts' most unique abilities: magic.

One of the most notable abilities of illusion beasts is their ability to use magic, something that very few animals of their size are able to do. The illusion beasts' magic- which involves projecting simple lights and sounds- is typically focused and cast through their crests. As a result, illusion beast crests act as biological "magic conductors" which has led to some people hunting them for their valuable horns.
Illusion beasts mainly use their magical powers for social displays, as well as the occasional intimidation and disorientation of anything they cannot fend off with just their claws and teeth. The illusion beasts' social displays are used for things such as long distance communication and (usually in males) competition to win over mates or for dominance of a herd.
