Description Aristaeus and Eros, both sons of Apollo, who is the god of music, poetry, prophecy and healing. Eros is also the god of love and desire, while Aristaeus is the god of rural arts and crafts. According to Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Aristaeus was in love with Eurydice, but she rejected him because she was married to Orpheus. He tried to force himself on her, but she ran away and was bitten by a snake. Orpheus went to the underworld to bring her back, but he lost her again because he disobeyed the rule of not looking back at her. Aristaeus was cursed by the nymphs for causing Eurydice’s death, and his bees died as a punishment. He prayed to his father Apollo, who told him to sacrifice four bulls and four heifers to the nymphs. He did so, and from their carcasses he found a new swarm of bees.
