After the death of the Wizard (Shazam) Billy Batson inherited the magic and was transformed into an adult white-haired version of himself. He started calling himself Marvel and helped Freddy Freeman prove to the Gods of Magic that he was worthy of their gifts. Freddy eventually proved himself (although Atlas was killed and Apollo took his place) and became the new version of Captain Marvel. Freddy had direct access to the gifts and no weakness to saying the word "shazam" so he named himself Shazam. He looked like a long haired version of the classic red Captain Marvel. This took place in "The Trials of Shazam" during the original 52 and 1 Year Later storylines.
