NaArMaMo 2008, Day 21: The Untempered SchismDoctor Who fan art featuring the Gallifeyian Untempered Schism as seen in the series 3 finale The Sound Of Drums/Last Of The Time Lords.
This is my twenty-first piece for this year's (Inter)National Art Making Month, in which you create a new piece of art every day in August..
This was drawn on a tablet PC using the airbrush tool only. Total time spent was about 3 hours.
I was having really nasty neck and upper back pain all day, by the end of work this had spread all the way down my (non-drawing) arm and was extremely uncomfortable. As a result, I didn't start drawing until gone 9pm because I was waiting for three different types of painkillers to kick in.
As a result of that, I scaled down my plans for this piece. I was going to draw in the view of Gallifrey behind the schism and perhaps the silhouette of the approaching 8-year-old Master.
All that aside, I think this turned out pretty well considering I was in quite a lot of pain for most of it...
It was fun to get to draw the time vortex as well

The Doctor's Intiation.
Doctor stand's infront of the schism and pronciates his name....tradition.
"I am the Doctor!"
Not tradition and to the surprise of the time lords present as witnesses.
"Who are you?"it asks.
"I'm the doctor?" he replies.
"Who are you?" it asks again.
"The doctor. I'm the the doctor!"This time upset, he's gone through a lot just to get to this point, this is unbalancing an unerving because it has never happened before.
"Who are you?Who are you?Who are you? Who are you?"It replies repeatedly in different voices almost to jib him.
"WHO AM I?WHO AM I?WHO AM I?"Clearly unhinged, the child cries out. Other time Lords step forward to comfort, but it is no help, the boy just stands there crying with his head down.
There is silence but for the the swishing noise of the schism and the child's sobs.
In the voise you can hear the though, try another tact,"I forgive you, Doctor Who."
The child raises his head and ask's like a brat with a grin through blurry eyes with dark circles.
"And who are you?"
There is a slight chortle as it replies,"Don't I know!"

Wow, I'm a little scared to look into it, and at the same time... What would I see?
It's kind of nice that way that the Master isn't there. It puts the viewer right in front of the schism, rather than as a viewer over the Master's sholder.
And that's some sweet airbrush work.

I did my stretches and managed to sleep on my back, really made a difference today. I'll make sure I look after it over the long weekend too...
