So here we are again... I did one of these for Detective Pikachu, and I knew it would only be a matter of time before I got to this one too. Anyway, this one's gonna be... An Interesting specimen to talk about.

Let's start with the obvious: The Character Design... Now this may SHOCK some people out there, but the Sonic in this movie actually looks pretty good. The Original Design slated for release in November of 2019... NOT So Good... Yeah that's a controversial opinion with this movie, Please don't hate me

A lot of people wonder if improved Animation or visual effects can save a movie, and in this case, it probably DID... I'm gonna say that most of the rest of the movie is pretty run-of-the-mill while the most notable aspect about it (being Sonic himself) could drastically impact people's open-mindedness for the story depending on whether he looked appealing or rather Ghastly! You would not believe how many lines of dialogue in this movie referring to the blue blur would've been CRINGE In Hindsight if they didn't change that in post, so props to them!

Anyway with that blue elephant out of the way, what you see is what you get with pretty much the rest of it. Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey pretty much steal the show as Sonic and Robotnik respectively. Both of them have excellently delivered lines, and they have fun personalities-Sonic for his kind of adorable curiosity about everything as well as how he uses his talent (also he's got plenty of decent one-liners) and Jim Carrey Robotnik just for being Jim Carrey Robotnik. He can be a bit much on the Jim Carrey Antics at times, but for the most part he was certainly THE BEST in this movie...

Even the other human stand-ins like Tom Wachowski and his wife Maddie had a few good lines. I dare even say they were more interesting than Tim & Lucy in the Detective Pikachu Movie.

Speaking of which, Sonic was Almost as good as that movie was... I think the character design for Sonic was about the only other thing comparable to Detective Pikachu besides the acting being better. As for the story though, while less stock (no 3rd Act Break-Up THANK YOU) it did feel like it had a few plot-holes in places... Here's the thing, Sonic has this sub-plot about feeling loneliness and after he meets Tom he wants to live his life to the fullest before he has to escape to a world with less things in it than Earth. Now... It's a nice idea seeing Tom trying to oblige with this, but I do feel that sometimes the movie spends... a bit too much time on these scenes considering they're trying to outrun Robotnik (by the way, Tom is considered an outlaw for most of the time he escapes with Sonic which can also throw off the logic of several scenes by a bit)

There are a few other things like that too which I don't have time to go into here. Most of it I can suspend disbelief for, but I do feel a lot of this could probably be fixed by one or two establishing scenes or somethin' I dunno...

And they do tend to DRAG with some of the more... I guess low key moments of the movie... Again, I get what they're going for, and some of the sentimental bits convince... other times it comes off as pretty melodramatic and I'm just waiting for the movie to get to the part where Jim Carrey starts randomly dancing to visual effects. I feel Detective Pikachu handled these kinds of scenes better, though to be fair it Never Did get as bad as that one Fake Out Death in that movie so... Meh...

When the film DOES get to what we want to see though, it gets pretty Good. The action scenes can be thrilling (even if once again they require a little suspension of disbelief) and the movie has a lot of fun with Sonic's abilities including the whole "Freeze Time" Thing... Which CAN be a bit of a plot breaker for more tense moments if it was done in other movies, but HERE they actually found a way to Get Away with that which I'm quite impressed by. And as I've previously stated Jim Carrey as Robotnik makes the most of everything, I'd say the movie is mostly worth it for Him Alone!

As far as fan service goes... I wouldn't say it gets Sonic Boom levels of meta (except for that one meme reference) but there are still probably a number of other things fans will recognize (like the name of the Town Sonic and co live in, etc) DO STAY for the End Credits stuff though... I think there's like one bit after the close-out title with Dr. Robotnik doin' stuff, another one takes place mid credits after they pretty much recap the movie in 16-Bit Graphics which I actually found SQUEE-Worthy, and THEN I think you can leave the theater during the scroll... I don't think there's much of anything after that.

Overall, I think I'd say I like this movie more for what it Wasn't than what it was, but there was still a decent chunk of "Was" here... Like Detective Pikachu, this is a passable Hollywood movie with content that can please fans-but Still probably isn't gonna make many best lists for the end of the year...

And if you're wondering... YES, I'm probably gonna dedicate a video review to this movie somewhere down the line like I did with Detective Pikachu. I think what I might actually do is review it back to back with the Original OVA Movie from 1999 and see how they compare or whatever. I currently have 3 scripts in the works for this month, but as soon as THOSE Reviews are complete, I think maybe that'll be the next thing I do.

In the meantime though, I suppose this movie was decent enough. It knows what it wants to be and can even take potshots at itself sometimes for that, so I guess I'll give it a score of:

Here's hoping the upcoming Mario Bros movie could be a memorable experience... Considering it's Illumination doing that one though, it's gonna take a Flippin' MIRACLE For them to pull THAT Off.
