i have a few grievances with the light fury's design in the httyd3 trailer, so i redesigned her!

the first major change i did is make her more male looking, or more similar to toothless. the amount of sexual dimorphism that dreamworks put into the original light fury design was strange to me, considering reptiles and amphibians hardly ever show much sexual dimorphism at all in nature. axolotls, an amphibian that night furies are heavily modeled off of have no dimorphism at all. the only way to tell an axolotl's gender is to sex it, and check its physical reproductive organs. i made her more akin to toothless's design simply because her being sleek and feminine made little sense to me.

i made this light fury's antennae much longer than her original design, and even a bit larger than toothless's own antennae. my reasoning for this ties into my whole concept for her. i imagined her subspecies of night fury being much more intertwined with fast and aerodynamic flight than fighting. these antennae could serve as cat whiskers in a sense. with them, she can feel even slight changes in the direction of the wind, and change her flight accordingly. they could also work as appendages that feel changes in atmospheric pressure and humidity, so she could feel a storm coming a mile away. this would give her an upper hand in knowing when to land and find a shelter from a storm, long before the storm hits.

her body has many different fins and sails all over, once again because of my thought that her subspecies would be solely focused on flight. these would add to her aerodynamics, making it so she could move through the sky with incredible speeds, tucking her limbs in to dive like an arrow in the air. these sails would also help her turn abruptly and smoothly, being able to tilt them up, down and sideways would make her able to make very quick maneuvers in the air.

finally, i chose a colour scheme that was less focused on her being white. i couldnt think of a single reason why a night fury would evolve to be white, unless it lived in a place like the arctic circle. so, i decided that, to be white, she'd have to be albino. albinism is a lack of pigment in the skin of a creature, hence why her sails, wings, and many of her scales are pinkish hued. her blood would tint her skin in the thinner parts, especially the wings and sails. i used albino bats like this one ( i.imgur.com/oColL6L.jpg ) as my reference for the colouring of the wings and fins. this lack of pigment in her scales would also make for an incredible show when she fires a shot. since we can see a bit of blue glow through when toothless shoots his fire, we can imagine that the light fury would glow spectacularly for a few moments before she lets her shot go.

i like to imagine that night furies would react to an albino of their kind much akin to how crows and ravens do, disowning and harassing it, and chasing it away or even attempting to kill it. the reason toothless reacts so well to the sight of her is because he's lived with hiccup for so long, and never known any other night furies, so he never picked up that instinct to be rid of albino ones. i dunno, that's just more of an idea ^^
