Description Here's another "Artist Trading Card" style Image. ... this was actually the second one I completed at Anizona 2009.

Also colored with my limited Copic Marker selection

As with the other cards completed at Anizona, this one was done WITHOUT REFERENCES.

Much better than my last Reference-free scribble of Link! I'm pretty happy with this one! ^_^

OMG! He'so cute!

The coloring is great as well as how you added lights to the drawing ^^

I think he's thinking on how can he save Zelda, just look at him, he seems kind of saddy and thoughful. Probably he doesn't know what to do รณ.o

Oh! then you want Link to be sad!!

If you like that kind of stuff it's ok.

To each his own.

I'd be more than happy to give you a thorough crit since you asked for it... but I'm going to do it here because I think DA's crit system is useless. >_>

The first thing that jumps out at me in this image is that there doesn't seem to be a definitive light source and full value range. My guess would be if you turned this to grayscale the shading wouldn't go darker than a 6-7 range. I don't know if you were limited by the media choice, though.

I think the main problem with the lighting/shading is that you have too many white highlights; there should only be a limited number of areas with that light of a highlight in order to make them focal points. There's no real focal point in this because there's so much extreme highlighting everywhere. I'd probably limit the highlighting to the metal portions of the piece and the hair. Woven fabrics and leathers wouldn't have as much shine to them.

If you do some cast shadows it will give him much more depth as a figure as well. The front boot should be casting a shadow on the back boot and the inner area of the upper thigh should be much darker to show some depth. Other areas where I'd place some cast shadows would be behind the sheath of the sword, underneath where his gloves are touching his legs, under his bangs and each layer of his collar casting slight shadows on the layer underneath. A bit of cast shadow where he's sitting would anchor him as well. It helps to really define where your light source is, too.

Try reflecting some colors here and there, too (I don't know how possible that would be with marker since I never use it as a medium). There should be some browns and greens bouncing off of the white tights and undershirt areas as well as a little touch of green to the hair and jawline of the face. Reflecting some of the background color to the undersides of his clothing will help unify him with his environment as well.

Hehehehehe, the Critique system is DIFFERENT. that's for sure. Still not certain what I think of it. :3

I was a little limited by media choice actually, I only had 29 markers when I drew this, 2 greens 2 browns 3 greys, about 4 blues, a couple yellows... some random miscellanious colors in-between. XD

but never-the-less this is a great critique, with alot of good suggestions I can certainly use in future projects and peices! ^_^

I'll keep the shading and highlighting in mind, I've picked up some more pens, including alot of pale colors I can use as highlights (instead of white... couldn't get the lighter blue yet, they were sold-out.) some more browns to work with and a few more greys.

I ALMOST want to redo Link so I can try out your suggestions! but I'd probably do a different pose if I did.

Thank you so much!

Correction: I take back what I said about the shading not going past a 6-7... I see some really dark touches around the gloves and boots. Try taking it to that full of a value range in the other areas of the piece, too.

Heheheh, I have one REALLY dark grey. but it was almost too dark for the browns I had before.

thanks! I'll try! ^_^

He looks quite depressed...poor guy. Either that or he ate something that didn't agree with him and he's stuck in a dungeon without an outhouse. One of the two.

I like your shading here.

It looks as though Link needs to get off his rear and go save Zelda and Hyrule. Unless that is the actual Tri-Force on the sheath, then I suppose he has already saved the day and is now engrossed in self-reflection. Maybe he is pondering his place in the world now that he knows he is a hero of legend. Or maybe someone made fun of him and hurt his feelings.. Or I suppose he may have been kicked in both shins really hard and though the initial pain has subsided they still need one final rub before it is entirely gone.. Or is he listening to a tale of lost love, loneliness, and tragedy...>.<.. Or he could just have a tummy-ache and need a hug =\... if thats the case he will just have to suffer though.

But without references? It definately turned out unmistakably Linkish, I can't tell it was without references. So coo. And I think the Copic Markers compliment Links character well. (Psst.. I think you colored outside the lines a lil' bit) XD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Jianre-M In reply to Sordoth [2009-04-24 17:06:02 +0000 UTC]

Heheheheheh.

what, Link does't get a moment to sit and contemplate the evils of his world? ... I mean, he was 10 years old one day, and 17 the next. ... That really has to mess with one's mind.

Even the greatest Heroes have their somber reflective moments. ... or maybe I just like to draw people somber and reflective!

.... actually I just wanted to see if how much of an entire figure I could fit into the card without decreasing the size I was working at. ... Of course he had to be posed too. XD ... so he ended up "speculative."

Thank you! ^_^ ... and yeah, I colored outside the lines a bit. this was only my second try with the little playing cards, and I'm still REALLY new to Copic markers. (maybe the fourth or fifth doodle total with those?) I don't really mind. You can't tell as well on the original. ^_^

When a hero has a somber reflective moment it is powerful, moving, and reflects the complex and often times tragic inner turmoil within their soul. When the average person is doing the somber reflective thing they are just considered emo or self-victimizing. Go figure ._.

I didn't really notice at first but then I stared at it.. and I saw it.. then I just had to POINT at it, poke it, and make it blaringly apparent to the rest of the world. y'know?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Jianre-M In reply to Sordoth [2009-05-13 17:55:36 +0000 UTC]

Well.... Heroes tend to suffer alot more tragedy and life-altering experiences than us common peoples. that's why they're Heroes!

but yeah, that's a pretty amusing point there.
