It was an interesting low lying fog, with the sun visible overhead. I've got another shot, a panorama I'll be uploading soon which shows a 'fogbow'. It's a panorama, taken quite close to the tree, with a 90 degree turn so the sun is at my back.
This shot I was facing south, with the rising sun on my left.

Yup. I just uploaded it. The picture is not that great, but fogbows are so rare (rainbows are far more common!) That I thought it was worth it.

Beautiful. Dreamlike - the gate to the unknown. Most catching to my eye is the colour gradient from the heavily fogged area by the tree, to the blue in the upper right corner. Also, the shading in the lower left to the lighter upper right works well.

You're right. Most of that is luck. I didn't consciously frame/compose the picture, it was more a matter of seeing it and viscerally realizing it would make a good shot.
I'm considering printing this shot, seeing how it turns out.
