I always wanted to know why some artists use the blue pencil. And which do you use? Studying in animation I heard col erase is good because it's easily erasable. But why is it better than just drawing with plain hb pencil?

it's an organizational thing. You can scribble and build up the meat of your drawing loosely in blue and than go in tight with lead (or my case ink). If you do a lot of constructional stuff in lead by the time you're ready to go tight it's a grey mess.
And I use the prismacolor blue lead in a mechanical pencil- [link]

I love that you skip pencils and just go from straight non photo blue to ink... comics forged in INK!!!

James! Your work is inspiring! I have to know, how do you achieve that "random blood splatter" effect on the right hand side of panel 1?

Thanks, dude! I just load a brush with white correction fluid and flick it over my finger. (same thing with ink spatter...except I use ink)

I love the fourth panel perspective in the rough page more than in the final version

I love seeing your process. You do a really nice job laying down the basic information in the pencils and then just drawing with your inks. Your final image has so much life that way.

thanks, dude! That's my hope! Plus skipping tight pencils saves a TON of time.

Are you going straight from blues to inks, or are you just inking directly onto your original pencils?

JHarren In reply to Monkeyslunch [2012-06-18 02:45:42 +0000 UTC]
yep! I'm still lacking a printer to do the whole, fancy blue line technique that the real pros are doing.

Hah, love the confidence I'm sensing there. Things are looking great lately, man. Keep it up! And although I love Dave Stewart's colours, I really rather prefer your work just the black and white.

thanks, dude! At the moment I'm so horrified by my crappy lines that having Dave Stewart at the end of the line really eases my mind.

Picked this up the other day... man that is some damn fine comicin' sir. It would be awesome to see you on another arc, but if Mikey Migs is calling I suppose you better answer.

I'm surprised by how much of the detail you leave for the inking side of things.

JHarren In reply to korbindai [2012-06-15 15:34:51 +0000 UTC]
yea, every time I tried tight pencils it took too long and it sucked the life out of the drawing. So leaving things vague left room for spontaneity and improv. It gives ink a chance to sing on their own rather than serving tight pencils, a stage that, ultimately, nobody ever sees.

Hah, never mind (the fourth panel question). I see you answered it below.

JHarren In reply to Inkthinker [2012-06-15 15:37:20 +0000 UTC]
yea, I had to check out the original to see why (these things go so fast that an inordinate amount of the decisions are unconscious or off the cuff). I fucked up on properly featuring that guy's character design and that was my attempt to shoe-horn what I could of him into that super horizontal panel. I think it was a bit of a mess, ultimately.

It also does a great job on continuing the page's flow. By flipping him you carried the sweep happening in the panel's focus which draws the eye nicely to the big guy in the final panel before the chains across conan's legs lead us into the next page.

You really switched up p4. Can you expand upon the reasoning? Did you freehand it, or stat in another rough?
Diggin' that sense of motion man, it's working hard. Looks good!

please tell me you are going to come back to this book, and that next issue is not your last. Becky Cloonan is amazing, but I literally can't fathom finding a better match for this book than you. You've made this one of my most anticipated books to pick up each month

JHarren In reply to machu9292 [2012-06-15 15:40:07 +0000 UTC]
wow, thank you very much. I'm really glad you dig it. To be honest I felt like I was intruding on a vision that was more Becky and Brian's. I got offered some more issues but I had to turn it down for more BPRD. That's not to say that I wouldn't return to some kind of Conan book in the future. I love the Barbarian!

It's very interesting to see the process, specially how you changed panels 4 and 5 from the first thumbnail to inks. The would have look great but they're now even better!

NICE,
Quick question in the 4th panel, hwy did you end up changing the angle of the shot.
Not dynamic enough?
Speedup the pacing a bit?

JHarren In reply to PhilipJeanPierre [2012-06-14 21:56:03 +0000 UTC]
I was wondering that myself. I did that issue months ago but I'm pretty sure my reasoning was that the character was missing his left ear and I didn't have a decent shot of it in any of the other pages so I shoe-horned it into the only place it would fit on this page.
