I mean, really, seriously? Grandiose much?

Maybe I'm just hanging out with the wrong crowds or spending too much time lurking on message boards. As an artist, I've given some nuance to my inner canon checking mindset (we're all guilty on that, don't deny it!). So, maybe, just maybe, over-saturation in Trek material ironically leads to staleness and tunnel vision. From what I've observed in the fandom, megafans who spend their time immersed in technical details make for lousy television critics. It's a vastly different skill set. That's cringey because what ubernerd Trekkies want is essentially a filmed Wikipedia page. Just boring, safe, stay in your lane checklisting. That also broadly defines the majority of pedestrian, uninteresting but "canonically correct" fanworks.

I've grabbed this from the fanbois in Trekmovie: "Star Trek needs to be a dictatorship where the utopian purists are in charge!".

You can bet your rear if there was internet in 1979, it would be fanatics screaming "ThEy rEDesiGnD EvrYTHng!!!" in the Motion Picture. Hard it is to admit, traditional Star Trek as we know it has become rather pastiche, in an endearing way of course! Staying too long in the comfort zone does that and we're even at a point where all the classic tropes have become parody via The Orville. F--king-A credit is due to MacFarlane though, he really hit home on that niche perfectly.

So what exactly is the epicenter of this fandom's aging situation? Drawing that fancy line between new and old. "They changed it, now it sucks!!!". You see, there's a mass imbalance going on here, purists can rage all they like about the flaws of the KT films and DSC. But subtly dig at the aesthetics of TOS, and they start screeching like incoherent baboons. Hilariously ironic.

Granted, it's the easy way out to virtuously chastise the behind the scenes people, but us Trekkies are equally at fault here. Blame everybody, do nothing! Hostile attitude problems to newcomers, even bordering on elitism. By definition, I'm one of those "new fans" that the old guard fandom supposedly derides. To the extent that people have accused me of drinking the kool-aid, way back when 2009 Trek came out. It's all rather amusing when I look back at it now. Trekkies love to act as if everything is dour and gloomy while conveniently glossing over the fact that there are people out there who actually like Discovery, or any of the "lesser" Trek versions. Bloody gatekeeping at its finest, but maybe its all they have left. Fighting a losing battle to the last argument.

Put it this way, for the longest time, Star Trek's sandbox stopped expanding and became stagnant. This was especially true for 1998-2008. Now that its attempted to venture for new audiences, its starting to feel like the existing players are being left behind to irrelevance, and I can imagine that hurts, deeply. Perhaps its time to grow up and let the new kids have their turn. I mean, how old were you when you first understood what Star Trek actually was? Fandom usually starts young.

Some people have been at this for 20, 40 or 50 years now. Time really puts things into perspective and hammers down this eternal debate:

"My Star Trek is better than your 'Star Trek'".

Draw a fancy line, consider the existence of Disco a "personal attack" or say "real" Star Trek ended in 1991. But the fact remains that this trifecta also constitutes a major, valid part of this enduring space pew-pew and sciencey franchise. Whether they are "worthy" or not, is just a singular opinion out of millions. And of course, this is my own 0.02 centavos on the matter. YMMV, grains of salt, and IDIC.
