Lost the camera stats while HDR processing:

I like the decision here to use the upper two thirds of the frame for the sky and the lower two thirds for the land. There's a lot going on in the sky, and using rule of thirds placement for the horizon places the foreground object at a nice, interesting position. There are maybe a couple of things I would have done differently. I'd have pulled just a bit to the right or cropped in post-processing to line up the third post from the left with the 1/3 line. Ultimately it would have been best to have done it with the original framing, as it would have provided a little better view of the road / driveway as well. Of course, I have no idea what was to the right of the frame, and you may have framed it this way intentionally to avoid capturing an unwanted object in the frame. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

Ultimately, your original exposure level was good, but I'd have personally merged a couple of more exposures for this particular photograph. 1/2 stop down would've brought out some more of the details in the posts in the foreground and made the sky less black, and a full stop up would've cut down on some of the blown out highlights in the clouds.

Altogether, I like the photograph, and it's quite good the way it is. Mostly these are just stylistic preferences.

Thank you for the tips! I'll admit I put this in an HDR processing program that does not require the different exposures... But I think now that I have a capable camera, I'll try doing it the correct way sometime

Nice work.Β  I don't see a lot of digital HDR in black and white.Β  You handled it well.

Thank you! I will admit that I use an HDR program for these. I do not actually take different exposure shots. That doesn't mean I don't put some effort into getting the levels the way I want but... I haven't ventured into true HDR technique yet!

Ah.Β  I've considered using HDR, but I do pretty well playing with the scanner setting then doing more with the Gimp after the fact.

I'm not a huge fan of HDR.. it kind of lends an unnatural appearance

JenFruzz In reply to davincipoppalag [2014-08-13 11:50:50 +0000 UTC]

Yes I can see that HDR seems to be a "love it or your don't" type of processing I don't see many people who are on the fence, or only like it some of the time

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

davincipoppalag In reply to JenFruzz [2014-08-13 12:29:56 +0000 UTC]

Yea.. the thing about HDR..it's a fine science... the idea.. High Dynamic Range is supposed to capture all the varying degrees of light and shadow, and there is a very delicate balance to making the image look like your eyes perceived it.. and giving it a sort of surreal look by overemphasizing the detals and contrast....I've seen some wonderfully balanced images that are truly amazing using HDR..but I think it takes quite a good while to master the technique to achieve that kind of balance..and it isn't easy.. so I dont hate it..

Yeah, I know what you mean It's just my personal style to be bold with a small dose of outrageous Β

But I agree, for those who want to use HDR to, like you said, add that surreal look... it's not the easiest thing to do but you feel so great when you finally do it!
