I like the decision here to use the upper two thirds of the frame for the sky and the lower two thirds for the land. There's a lot going on in the sky, and using rule of thirds placement for the horizon places the foreground object at a nice, interesting position. There are maybe a couple of things I would have done differently. I'd have pulled just a bit to the right or cropped in post-processing to line up the third post from the left with the 1/3 line. Ultimately it would have been best to have done it with the original framing, as it would have provided a little better view of the road / driveway as well. Of course, I have no idea what was to the right of the frame, and you may have framed it this way intentionally to avoid capturing an unwanted object in the frame. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>
Ultimately, your original exposure level was good, but I'd have personally merged a couple of more exposures for this particular photograph. 1/2 stop down would've brought out some more of the details in the posts in the foreground and made the sky less black, and a full stop up would've cut down on some of the blown out highlights in the clouds.
Altogether, I like the photograph, and it's quite good the way it is. Mostly these are just stylistic preferences.

Nice work.Β I don't see a lot of digital HDR in black and white.Β You handled it well.

Thank you! I will admit that I use an HDR program for these. I do not actually take different exposure shots. That doesn't mean I don't put some effort into getting the levels the way I want but... I haven't ventured into true HDR technique yet!

Ah.Β I've considered using HDR, but I do pretty well playing with the scanner setting then doing more with the Gimp after the fact.

Looks interesting.Β Supposedly it runs ok with Wine so I would use it on my Linux box.

love those clouds!Β I love how its mostly th esky shot and some land- I think the clouds look very interesting and contrast against the landscape nicely!

I'm not a huge fan of HDR.. it kind of lends an unnatural appearance

Yea.. the thing about HDR..it's a fine science... the idea.. High Dynamic Range is supposed to capture all the varying degrees of light and shadow, and there is a very delicate balance to making the image look like your eyes perceived it.. and giving it a sort of surreal look by overemphasizing the detals and contrast....I've seen some wonderfully balanced images that are truly amazing using HDR..but I think it takes quite a good while to master the technique to achieve that kind of balance..and it isn't easy.. so I dont hate it..

Awesome sky! And I like the tones you saved in the trees - an easy thing to lose when trying to get the blacks nice and deep. Beautiful shot!
