I was planning to do a two-part journal this week, featuring a top 10 or 12 or whatever list of my favorite female animated characters – as I’ve mentioned before, I’m an avid supporter of well-written girl characters in any form of fiction, but especially animation. But then I decided it’d be more fun to draw them all instead of just writing about ‘em.

'Cause she's a woman of purpose. She knows what she believes in and she does everything she can to achieve it. Granted, she has flaws - her temper gets the best of her at times - but I still admire her devotion to making the world a better place for everyone.
At least when she's written right, anyway. The American Dad writers have a bad habit of mishandling her, making her give up her beliefs in an instant for the sake of a bizarre laugh. That always rubs me the wrong way.

I just watched Coraline again after I last saw it in theaters. Great movie! I even added it to my Top 10 list for Non-Disney animated films.

I thought about it, and I don't really know if Meg counts as one of my favorites anymore. I was always more intrigued by her potential as a character, rather than what the writers actually did with her. Even during the best years of Family Guy, Meg really didn't have a whole lot of depth to her personality beyond being the unpopular kid in school. We saw flashes of interesting stuff, but the writers never did anything with any of it. Overall, she was pretty generic.
But that's where my love of Bob's Burgers comes in. When it comes to the "awkward teenage girl" character type, Tina Belcher has turned out to be a much funnier and more interesting character than Meg ever was. The show doesn't dump on her; it treats her like a real person with a life beyond the halls of her school. And that life is hilarious.
