I got on a Flash Gordon kick a few months back and did this sketch, of my take on the movie inspired Flash, before the new Sci-Fi TV series came out.The 1980 movie was epic for me, I absolutely love the spirit of it, and Max Von Sydow's Ming was a treasure. Also, Sam Jones IS Flash!!
I recently got the DVD, and it holds up every time I go back and view it. The lavish sets and costumes, the incredilbe design, the cast, and god, that Queen music.
It's so visually assaulting, fun, and sexy.
How can you not love it?!
(I know, I know, it's not for everyone)
Anywho...
I dug up the pencils, then finished and colored em. I've altered some things, but stayed pretty true to the movie take.
The TV show, as it turns out, is pretty awful, but still some fun, and some of the cast are decent (while others are just plain bad).
I'd love to do a Flash Gordon comic, but I've setteled for developing my own take on it...

Love the zany attitude of the film. Even more of a fan of the 80s cartoon by Filmation, which did sooo much more justice to the original comic-strips.

Yeah, I loved the cartoon too...
I picked it up on DVD last year at the same time as the movie, but haven't really watched it yet.
Saw the special features and the first couple eps... it's good for it's time, but still not the greatest (animation wise)

I loved that movie. Brian Blessed is an absolute legend in it, stealing every scene he's in, with his potent masculinity and incredible vocal delivery.

To me the rifts are more like Sliders that StarGaet. And while I really don't care much for the look of Ming the guy playing him does evil really well.
