Description Chapter 1
Jenna yawned and watched the clocks hands tick slowly, wondering why Mrs. Fletcher wouldn't let them talk in a last period study hall on a Friday. She looked down at her stinging legs. Her pores were turning blue and it felt as though there might be sand flowing through every one of her veins. She got out of her seat and walked to the desk at the front of the room. "Mrs. Fletcher, can I go to the bathroom?"
"Sure, just grab the bathroom pass on the way out." Mrs. Fletcher mumbled without looking up over her mound of teacher's geometry books.
Jenna shuffled across the room and grabbed the engraved wooden block from the hook next to the door. As she made her way down the hall her breathing became rough and she felt the skin on her neck stretching. Her walk went from a normal walk to a jog. She turned sharply into the bathroom and stuck her hands under the automatic sink. Her hands absorbed the water immediately and sent it running through her body, all the way down to her legs. She cupped her hands and let them fill up under the running faucet. She splashed water onto her neck and rubbed it in around to the back and under her hair.
A sigh of relief came up from her lungs and freed itself into the open air. She had never been very comfortable on her legs but whenever she "dried out" she felt as though she were walking against a flowing river.
Jenna walked back to her seat in the classroom and waited with an anxious mind for the final bell to ring. When the bell rang she bolted up from her seat and sped to her locker switching books and not stopping to talk to anyone. All that was on her mind was getting home to the lake. Fridays after school she and her mom drove to their lakeside cabin for the weekend. It became a tradition when her father ran out on them after her fourth birthday.
Her mom pulled up in front of the high school in her baby blue Toyota Yaris along with a long line of other after school pick up moms. Jenna threw her backpack into the back seat and climbed in to the passenger side next to her mom.
"Hi honey," said her mom, "how was your day?"
"It was fine, but I almost dried up in last period. I thought I would be fine when I finished my water bottle, but I guess that doesn't work like that." She gently brushed her hand over neck.
"Jenna, you have to be more careful. You know when that happens you shouldn't delay getting to water! If you dry up you'll change and then what'll you do? If anyone every finds out,"
"Mom, calm down! I made to the sink in time! You worry way too much about me, it's neither of our faults I have to hide it like this, and besides, I like being half and half."
"Oh, I know. Sometimes I just wish I could have given you a more normal life." Her mom sighed and readjusted herself in her seat.
Jenna reached down and scratched her legs. She couldn't wait to get to the lake and jump right in. Ever since she learned how to control when she changed, swimming was more fun.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
They pulled into the cobble stone drive way of their rustic lake side cabin. The car stopped and Jenna ran right in. She bolted to her room and changed into her bikini top. Her mother bought this house specifically because she knew it would the best amount of seclusion from towns and other people, so Jenna could swim in privacy. Jenna tossed on an old ripped skirt and returned downstairs. Her mom was bringing bags in and placing them at the foot of the stairs.
"Mom, do you want me to wait for you or can I go right in?"
Brushing her hair from her face she looked at her anxious daughter and said, "Go right ahead."
A huge smile spread across Jenna's face and within seconds she was swinging over the shimmering water on a rope tied to a huge oak tree. She let go of the rope and let herself drop into the water. Ripples shot across the surface and a large tail pierced the top of the lake before sinking back down.
It was less than six minutes before she returned to the surface. She turned on her back and let the sun bounce off of her silver and blue scaled tail. Six fissures each about three inches long had opened up on her neck three on each side.
Jenna's mom strolled onto the lawn and sat on the rock wall at the edge of the water. She watched Jenna move fluently through the water like it was where she was meant be. Jenna was always her most comfortable with her tail.
Jenna dove underwater and swam alarmingly fast the edge of the lake. Leaning against the rock wall she let out a sigh. "Aren't you coming in?"
Her mom looked into her eyes as if she were trying to read the aqua blue irises. "Of course I am!" she threw her tee shirt onto a patio chair to reveal a bright yellow, one-piece swim suit. She leaped off a large boulder and pierced the water with an elegant swan dive.
Jenna's school work and home life flew away into the cloudless, light blue sky. She was finally at peace for a week of spring vacation.
