Jazz is Optimus Prime's right-hand man. Unlike Prowl, Prime's military strategist, Jazz responds well to change and improvisation. Whatever surprises the Decepticons spring, Jazz can deal with it. His position as Special Operations head calls for all the skills he possesses, yet he still has time to add some style to everything he does. Jazz's upbeat and outgoing personality makes him one of the most popular Autobots among the Ark's crew.

An admirer of Earth music of every kind, Jazz loves culture. More than most other Autobots, he has his finger on the pulse of Earth trends and lingo, effortlessly incorporating human slang into his vocabulary. Chances are, Jazz could tell you the status of almost any reality television show and each week's Top 40 list.

A veteran Autobot even before the crash of the Ark on Earth, Jazz's love of human culture led him on many adventures during his time on the planet; notable escapades included his encounter with the Man of Iron and a mission to rescue Optimus Prime from Decepticon custody, before he was taken offline by an Underbase-empowered Starscream. Eventually, however, Jazz would return to life, clad in a new Pretender body; it was in this form that he participated in the Matrix Quest, part of the mission to the planet VsQs where he and the other Pretenders fought the Matrixspawn. Eventually, Jazz would take part in the showdown against Unicron as part of the united Autobot-Decepticon alliance.

In an alternate universe, Jazz would become a leading member of Earthforce, clashing with foes such as the Mayhem Attack Squad and eventually having to confront his old foe Megadeath during a mission to Cybertron's Acid Wastes. In another timeline, Jazz returned to Earth to defend the planet from Jhiaxus and his Cybertronians, and in yet another divergent reality he took part in various battles against Bludgeon, Jhiaxus, and the Dark Matrix.
