Since you added
'critique requested',
there's one thing that bothers me,
the lights, when it's approaching
and passing the viewer might be
a little too much.
As soon as you see it from behind,
you could say those are rockets, but using the same effect on the whole scene might be too much and make it appear unspectacu- lar. This could get a problem if there's something you want to amphasize with a glow, like rockets?
Other than that it looks pretty well done

You're on about the anamorphic flares that are on the glowing lights on the front right?
The blue bits?

Yeah I can see what you mean. It does muddy the the shot some what. I'm happy with it but I'm gonna take a look without the flare.

I did it for two reasons; First to hid that I have no experience texturing something thats not a ball. So I have hidden the flat basic textures with all the lights and glows.

then second I was going for realism with the way those lights would do and flare within the lens... But then again it is a shot of a space ship... In space. So who cares about realism Haha

Thanks for the feed back, very much appreciated

Well if you're unsure about texturing, why did
you do a ship in the first place. I mean you could have done something
that glows and give it a rough shape with particles or something...
My question is, why did you model it, if you hide it behind all those flares?
When I saw this I thought 'hey, there's a spaceship appearing out of a glow, wonder what it looks like' but when I saw it's hidden I thought 'Oh, okay, there isn't going to be a ship, simply some flares' and got a little disappointed.
The whole thing about effects is to make the audience want to see what's happening,
if what happens is hidden behind another effect some people might think 'does he even think about
the thing he made us want to see badly?' and people might be a little disappointed, well at least I was.
You did well on making me want to see what's coming, so the effects are well done,
but you somehow left me waiting...
Hope this makes sense to you.
Whatever, keep it up, I'd really like to see a nice shot with that spaceship a lot of people
should be waiting to see after watching this

Ok I get you.

Well its for a film I made and basically I didn't have any CGI like this because, as you guessed 3D isn't my thing, and for some other reasons to do with the story. I do VFX compositing and motion graphics, editing and the like, as well as primarily I am a cinematographer and self shooting director.

But my cousin who did all the audio for the film needed a couple of shots like this as he was using it as part of his final piece for his degree and he is re mastering all the audio in 5.1 surround. Oh and the film was originally done as part of my Masters degree.

I initially didn't wan't CGI as it took away from the film, which is all set inside an escape pod and the main characters dreams.

And I felt that shots like this, combined with my inability to make the shots look how I wanted, would take away from my original edit.

So I settled on this flare look as it covered all my problems but gave my cousin the shots to do some 5.1 pans with the sound.

But I know what you're saying as well. I guess when this shot is shown alone from the film it has a different connotation and context.

Very interesting stuff, making me think!
This is good

Well I guess if it was a less important part of a bigger project
you could say it works

I'm currently working on a 3D Project as well, though my favourite profession is comic artist,
as far as I've been told, I'm still doing okay...
You could say, I know how you feel about doing sth. you're not really familiar with ^^

Ah, what I forgot to mention, I really like the shaking,
during that pan, great timing ^^

You're welcome,
I'm glad it makes you think

Glad you like the shake, that was an after thought. The original render felt like something like that was missing.

Yeah doing things you ain't used to when already overloaded is a big no no for me haha!

Comic art! I would love to be able to do that kind of stuff! It's all so cool it's crazy!

3D is a good thing to learn though as it can only help Comic stuff. Take it to a new dimension... Literally

I saw your dragon, monster... Thing in your gallery. Is that your project?

Thanks. Glad you like it

Not to long really. Had to do it on my lunch breaks so it was spread over time. But i have cheated and missed out texturing by just using basic materials and hiding it with lights and compositing in AE.
I textured the planet though. But I didnt make the textures. I'm not texture artist :S

Took a couple of days to do the first render, which was the ship (I rendered each element separately). I have only a small render farm to use :S

Anyway thanks again
