So I've had a couple people asking me about the red votive bibs on the statues. While no one knows for sure, from what I've read, the most common theory is that the red bibs are used to ward off demons and sickness, as messengers it's important that they don't get sick.

You also want to keep your fox messengers happy, which is probably why someone made this girl a hat. The idea behind it is if you keep your messengers happy, they will be more inclined to pass on the good things you do and leave out more of the bad things. To that extent, parishioners will leave offerings to the shrine foxes. These offerings range from Inari-sushi (fried tofu sushi) to Sake, which was the most popular as I was walking the Mount Inari Trail or something you made for the messenger, like a votive bib or a hat to cover a broken ear. Someone had left a couple hundred yen coins as an offering to this particular fox, you can see them down by her paws.

This little girl was in an area that had some really really old shrines. I think they had been there for 100+ years and this fox seemed to be at her station all that time.
