I heard somebody say that it was a gloomy and dark film and they should have never have made a sequel. I just wanted to strangle them after that :3

Exactly, and I don't know, what they expected. It's normal that sequels are darker, adventures more dangerous. It would be boring otherwise. Plus, it looks like they didn't notice the animation. It was magnificent and because of that, I'd recommend the movie even if story was bad (but again, I think it was great and just how it should be)

Well let me explain my thought process.
Toothless is glowing. Last he was glowing was when he was covered in ice by an Alpha and was serious PO'ed when he blasted his way out. Ergo someone done something to piss off Toothless. Hurting Hiccup is probably the fasted way to do that.
