Description
Biology: Solitary habit, except in the reproductive season and in the case of the mother accompanied by a puppy (s). In the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul, it has been observed on two occasions, from three and up to eight individuals of this species in a persecution behavior. In both cases, the animals were observed running at high speed forming a single row. According to the authors, the observed chasing behavior may have a reproductive function, where the males would chase the female in heat (Desbiez et al. 2006), a suspicion confirmed by the observation, in the same place, of the same chasing behavior followed by copulation ( Walfrido Moraes Tomás, filming and personal communication cited in Medri et al. 2011, p. 80).
This species has a general feeding habit that includes invertebrates (mainly insects), plant material (fruits of bromeliads and palms, tubers, etc.), small mammals (four wild rodents Calomys sp. Were found in an individual's stomach, Bezerra et al. 2001), dead animals and carrion (Emmons 1990,
Redford 1985, Medri 2008). Several individuals have already been observed together feeding on meat and larvae of dead animal carcasses (Moeller quoted in Nowak 1999, p. 160). Euphractus sexcinctus has mainly daytime activity, but may have activity at night.
