Never bothered much with RAW images, the file sizes seemed to be cumbersome, but looking at your results I think I may spend some time! to see what i can do, great shot, love the colours. LOL and I'm a 'Mac' man so all will fit

That's great, I hope you do! The way I see it, you are working with a digital negative, the pure image. It's the only way to go. I've only been able to do a few pictures so far, as I haven't been out to take pictures in a while, but just from these few, I see a huge difference. This shot surprised me.
I'm glad to hear you are a MAc man! Big for the fav!!!!

raw image? can you tell me more about that ?
your focus, color and composition - and i also think the background repeat is a great way to move the back and forth in this image - very nice

IrishRaine In reply to Cmac13 [2006-07-22 14:15:28 +0000 UTC]

The raw image, is the literal digital equivalent to a negative. You are working with a pure picture, not one that has been processed in your camera into JPEG. It hasn't been compressed. It is awesome!

thank you for the sweet comments!

Cmac13 In reply to IrishRaine [2006-07-22 14:24:01 +0000 UTC]

i may try that - does it give you greater adjustment abilities in PS as well?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IrishRaine In reply to Cmac13 [2006-07-22 17:55:58 +0000 UTC]

well, yes, because you are starting from scratch and not having to fix what the camera decided. Also, an extra program like Lightroom (free Beta) or Aperture would really benefit.

Sorry to hear about your head, I;ve been looking at your gallery also, and I'm curious to know more about Apple Aperture... How do you like it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IrishRaine In reply to froggynaan [2006-07-21 01:59:30 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, my head is much better today. I think I've been getting migraines from playing on the computer all the time.

I like Aperture so much, I can't say enough about it! Have you been to Apple's site regarding it? They have several videos you can watch there that show what Aperture can do. The videos are pretty convincing. I haven't had the time to finish the DVD tutorial that came with it, but I can already do tons of stuff with it, and it has already saved me easily hours of my life processing pictures. Kid you not. It also came with this great book that describes all of the features, and they have free on-line seminars showing even more great stuff we can do with it. The only down side is I think it is for Mac's only. I'm not sure, but pretty sure that is the case. All we have are macs, so I lucked out. I hope to take more RAW pics in the next few days, and can't wait to get back in Aperture to process them.

beautiful picture, i love those flowers. i never used raw format as it takes loads more memory on the memory card. but for some images it might be much better as it's not compressed and gives you lots more room to work on. this apreture software, is it free or you have to buy it? you got me interested too. as i always wanted to be able to develop my own classic photos as my father did, this would probably be like darkroom for digital

IrishRaine In reply to Ilharess [2006-07-18 14:11:10 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for your comments and faving this picture!

I honestly feel RAW is the only way to go. The image has not been interpreted or compressed by the camera, it is the equivalent of a digital negative. Yes, it takes up a lot of room. I had to buy a Macbook Pro before I could get Aperture, which was a huge leap in faith and a chink from the wallet, but it had to be done to be able to work with RAW efficiently. I felt really guilty at first, I spent my family's summer fun basically, but now that I've seen the difference in the pictures and working with them, I feel much better. My family has been so supportive with this. Also, I like how I can still do some stuff in Photoshop easily from Aperture, it opens the program from within Aperture quickly, and the work I do is automagically updated inside Aperture. It is truly, the digital darkroom. You will love it! It cost $300 and here is the link: [link] They have several movies you can watch there about Aperture, which is what sold me. I hope this helps!

i will try to get this, and i hope it works in windows. you see, i wanted to buy me a mac, but noone uses it here so i'd be incompatible with the rest of the people in this country and as macs are more expensive too, i gave up. hope it changes someday as i think they are better then pc's. thanks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IrishRaine In reply to Ilharess [2006-07-19 12:03:09 +0000 UTC]

Please make sure it works on windows! I don't think it does. I'm sorry.

There is a pc application that has a free beta download called Lightroom. It isn't Aperture, but you may like it. Here is the link: [link] It has been getting good reviews, too. The Beta version expires in January 2007, but then I think Lightroom will be available to be purchased. It works with RAW, and I hear it offers similar stuff as Aperture. Perhaps it is as good. I hope this helps! Good luck!

You're very welcome! Please let me know how it turns out for you. Perhaps you can get up and running with Lightroom today. I think Aperture is far better, but Lightroom is free for now and can buy you some time.

By the way, some time this fall macs will be released with a new updated operating system, where it will include a program called Bootcamp. Bootcamp will partition your mac so that you can run windows. It allows you to boot up in windows or mac. Then you can run all windows applications, and apple applications, like Aperture. It's a great thing for windows users who would like to have a mac. So, this should be available on new macs in the next few months. Perhaps this is a way for you to go, too?

Ilharess In reply to IrishRaine [2006-07-19 12:50:30 +0000 UTC]

maybe, but as far as i know mac programs use up lots more memory so it should be very strong machine. and i don't like windows myself...i'm only forced to use ti. time will tell if i can do it with new mac
