Nice shot! What equipment did you use?

Thanks I'm glad you like it. I used an 8" Newtonian reflector on a Losmandy G-11 German equatorial mount. 50mm guide scope with the Orion Starshoot Autoguider. Canon Digital Rebel XT.

Oh God, I'll probably sound like a total idiot, but what exactly are these things (8" Newtonian reflector / Losmandy G-11 German equatorial mount) you mentioned? I've been wanting to try out some Astrophotography for ages but, to be honest, I don't know what equipment I need. Is it possible to just use my Canon 450D and a lot of patience and Photoshop? Or do I need special lenses and/or filters?

No problem...The Newtonian Reflector is my telescope (I attach my camera to it in place of the lens. The Losmandy G-11 is what I mount my telescope on, (it accuratly tracks the movement of the stars) this allows me to take long exposures with having the stars trail.
You can take images of the sky with just a lens, camera and a tripod.
It is best to try and keep your exposures to no longer than about 30 seconds otherwise the movement of the stars will become noticeable. Or you can shoot star trails, just point close to the North Star and put the camera on Bulb and let it go for a few minutes or more. The stars will make circular streaks.

Hope this helps
