He arrived on a morning caught black with rain, in our city of iron and steam.  Some say he stepped off a silver steel train, mixed in with the crowds of bustling commuters.  Others whisper that he came from the moon, swooped down like an angel, stern and bright.  But I know the truth.  I was there on that rainy morning, when the clouds seemed full of sorrow.  He stumbled off the first bus out of nowhere, bumped shoulders with me as I waited for my own bus to arrive, like a shadow of a man who has seen the far side of hatred and love alike.

"Sorry..."

He had mumbled that word with weakness and a hollow gasp, dragged it out from the dusty bellows of his lungs.

His name was nobody

Looking back on that eerie day, my memory betrays the fibers of my heart.  I cannot recall his face, nor do I remember what he wore.  Even those eyes of his that seemed to live eternal were hazy now, blurry pinpricks of light in my mind  Only two things manage to keep.  That first kiss will never escape me, his lips tasting mine, the silence our only witness, his fingers trailing through my lengthy locks of hair.  And that glowing warmth as he vanished.  He took my cancer with him.

The hospital cameras had captured his voice that night.  I've listened to them hundreds of times.

"You are lucky Jessica.  You have a beautiful heart.  And this is your first encounter with love...but I am not here for you.  I am here to heal you, to give you a new life, to let you love, truly.  I am no angel.  I am no friend.  I am just nobody."

I don't love him.

But sometimes...I like to whisper thank you as the world of dreamland takes me nigh.  Death no longer stands at my shoulder.  Nothing does.  Nobody does.
