Description When people look at the poster of Martin Luther King, Jr., they might glance past it, assuming it to be Shepard Fairey’s iconic portrait of Barack Obama. Then, the viewer does a double-take; the person depicted in the poster looks absolutely nothing like the President-Elect. Nevertheless, there is a strong stylistic resemblance among the two posters and the oversized caption “HOPE” is almost identical to the original. When I was in the process of brainstorming, I wanted the memorial to reflect the character and personality of Dr. King. He was a strong leader, a determined pioneer, a dreamer, and a spokesman for change. As I listed his traits, a mental image of Fairey’s poster appeared in my mind. There were many so many similarities between King and Obama. So, I played on the parallels in a pop-culture manner that still memorialized King’s importance as a civil rights leader.

This is based off of Shepard Fairey's portrait of Barack Obama. I take no ownership of the style! Fairey is my idol
