Description The Shinto deity Inari is the god or goddess of rice and harvest. A third of the shrines throughout Japan are dedicated to Inari. The most famous is the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. No one quite knows Inari's gender. You may notice that in many of her shrines you'll find plenty of fox statues. The fox, symbolizing both benevolenceand malevolence, is sometimes identified with the messenger of Inari, and statues of foxes are found in great numbers both inside and outside shrines dedicated to the rice god. And she has fox messengers known as kitsune. It is usually the zenko no kitsune that are dedicated to Inari. You'll find tons of fox statues and drawings in her shrines. And she protects samurai in Battle who fight for good. Some say she is a kitsune herself.
