Description SPOILERS FOR GURREN LAGANN ...and FLCL, probably!
You have been warned.

Shinji (Evangelion)
Naota (FLCL)
Simon (Gurren Lagann)
I could add Nadia so the group could be complete, but... eh, I don't know. Boys only.

I can't help but think they're similar in many aspects...
robots, unrequited loves, varying degrees of self-esteem issues and the fact that they all get over it and MAN UP at some point

...OH, WAIT.

Poor Shinji, he is an utter recluse who never truly became close to any one. His entire life he's been burying himself away from others so as not to hurt himself. He watched his mother die in front of him, his father abandoned him giving Shinji no one to support him in this difficult time. When we get to point of the series Shinji has come to be very broken and uncaring about himself. He wants recognition, even if its to pilot a robot against eldrich abominations. He is like what many people actually become, hollow. Some people might be able to "man up" but that is not how everyone acts. The end of the main series I took to be one of those moments of despair where you try and tell yourself everything is fine, but as anyone who has seen End of Evangelion can tell you, this all falls apart as the truth of reality crushes down upon Shinji. Life is not always what you make of it. Sometimes things take control and you can do little more than weep to yourself as your life drains down the sink. Shinji is who we would really be like if we faced what he has. I prefer Shinji because he is far more real than those delusional caricatures of reality. Out of them all I prefer Shinji.

Anime Abandon ain't the ultimate authority on Evangelion.

Dosen't change the fact on Evangelion, here are quotes from Animerica about it: "Evangelion is garbage written by committee with no consistent story or sanity. And now, thanks to all the BS of the original series, 3.33 has successfully destroyed the film franchise. But I'm sure delusion says otherwise."

"All "symbolism" in Eva is accidental. The show was dictated by committee and constantly shifting to match fan expectations. It was created in the worst way possible. It is a boring, pretentious, insane mess. The movies were faring MUCH better, with 2.22 being one of the best anime movies I've ever seen... but the 3rd movie had ZERO "character development" and was 99% empty mythos babble that was not explained, established, foreshadowed, or explored in the slightest. It's as though the movie remake expects the audience to have watched the entire series and understand all the nonsense being spat onto the screen. Well, if that's the case, THEN WHY BOTHER WATCHING THE MOVIE?! If they're going to devolve into the exact same crap that made the series so convoluted and incomprehensible, why bother? But yes, I must be too "retarded." Clearly. Thank you for demonstrating what I have about Eva fans and the series in general. Everybody makes empty, unsubstantiated claims that there's all this meaning and symbolism, but when I challenge them on it, they scream obscenities and call names. Because that makes you right."

"To conclusively prove my point, I only need three words: End of Evangelion. The writers, director, and everybody behind the project had so little concept of any significance behind what they were doing that they had no inkling whatsoever of how to resolve it. Even after trying TWICE. That tells me that they were making it up as they went along and had no grand intentions, plans, or message. None. The creators themselves have no idea what either of the endings mean, both of which contradict each other and make everything A MORONIC MESS OF COLOSSAL PROPORTIONS. I have sat through lectures by UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS on the relevance, symbolism, and profundity of Evangelion, but by simply checking those sentiments, no matter how well-studied, against the simple facts of how Evangelion was created, it is all exposed as made up one-sided interpretation made possible by the still-prevalent mindset of postmodern criticism (i.e., the original creators' intentions are not of higher importance because there is inherent equal significance and importance in the unrelated personal interpretations of everyone else). Ultimately, if people want to watch it, get meaning out of it, and think it's more than it is, that's up to them. But I'm not "retarded" for calling it what it is. Because, objectively, I'm right. And nothing can change that."

"Another weird quirk of Hideaki Anno: His abject, staunch refusal to write an ending for any story he tells until he gets to the ending. That is the sole reason for why the ending of Evangelion is an unmitigated disaster mess. The most criminally perpetrated myth in all of anime culture is that Evangelion ran out of budget at the end, so the final episodes became what they are. That is patently untrue. In the midst of writing the final six episodes--and not before--Anno became arbitrarily interested and then, subsequently, obsessed with psychology. His intent was to then, regardless of what came before, cram that into the final episodes of the show as much as possible. The final episodes of Evangelion are EXACTLY what he wanted to be. It's a fact. So, love him or hate him, he is a fool when it comes to storytelling by his own design."

"Evangelion 3.33 had no plot. A bunch of people blathered in made-up nonsense dialog for 70 minutes while random shots of things happened and then there was a confusing mess of a climax that also made no sense. Then, finally, the movie ended. Shinji is the most apt audience surrogate in the history of film as he walks around begging EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER to explain the plot of the film and every single one of them refuses. Thanks everyone, I'M SO ENGAGED RIGHT NOW, I CAN BARELY HANDLE IT."

I don't care about what Animarica says either. Nobody is arguing that Evangelion 3.0 isn't a shitty movie either.

Not many people are going to argue that the original Evangelion wasn't a poorly done story either.

When I first watched Evangelion, I saw so much of myself in Shinji, and I guess that helped me understood the series a lot more than what most people make of it. What I hate, though, is the people I've seen bash on him for being such a pussy and not man up. I agree with them to a certain level, but what I really hate is how those very people don't realize that what they say is far easier said than done for people like Shinji.

DoomMarine58 [2013-06-13 07:43:09 +0000 UTC]

Keep in mind Shinji didn't have an older brother to hold his hand like Simon and Naota, who needed others to be strong for them before they could man up themselves. Shinji doesn't have anyone to rely on since everyone in his life lets him down. Not to mention he's been through much worse than Simon or Naota. So i'd appreciate it if you'd back the fuck off making fun of him.

Why didn't you just have Shinji stand up casually and say:

"Well, people might hurt me, but I'll keep plugging away at life. Because I know that when I was happy in their company my feelings were real, so it's worth the pain."

I mean, did you even pay attention when you watched NGE?
