Yōuyǎ is 25 during Book 1 and has lived in Republic City for 7 years. She went by the false name Mìmì 秘密 (which /not/ coincidentally means 'secret') for the majority of those 7 years, especially while an Equalist.

Yōuyă heard about Amon and the Equalists (平) soon after she moved to the city, though she wouldn't see him in person until a couple years later. Amon was holding a late night rally/meeting of some sort at a small bar (the bar welcomes 18-20 year olds but doesn't serve alcohol to them) where Yōuyǎ was spending a sleepless night at. She soon started working at the bar so she could see and hear more from Amon, and, ya know, make some money. Even though a firebender (unbeknownst to everyone at that point, except Tahno cuz she's a dumb bitch, I'll give context on this later 🙂), she found herself agreeing with them.

At that point Amon stated that he simply wanted equality for nonbenders, for them not to be treated like lower class citizens. Yōuyǎ assumed that he meant they would go about in a peaceful manner by protesting, challenging the government/council's hypocrisy, bringing awareness, etc. The Equalists did just that, for awhile anyway. She didn't know the full extent of Amon's plan or how far he was willing to go to make his vision of the world a reality.

When Amon made his intentions know and revealed his "ability" to everyone, Yōuyǎ was shocked and understandably terrified. She was horrified that the Equalists, a group she fought so hard for and believed in, was becoming something extremely aggressive and dangerous. However, she was too scared to leave, as that meant she would have to reveal she herself to a group of anti benders. Yōuyǎ was shocked as everyone else when it turned out Amon was using bloodbending to "equalize" benders.
